Nikon FTW!. I would just go to Best Buy or some place and pick up the cheapest body. I dont recall what number they are throwing on them now. D60 maybe. They are a great entry level dslr. Make sure you get the kit that comes with a lens. That will get you going, then later on you can throw some money down on a better lens that will suit your needs once you know what/how you are going to shoot.

Outdoor shots as long as you dont need a huge zoom, then you would be fine with the lens it comes with. Pick up a ND4 or ND8 (neutral density) filter for better color and less highlights.

For Entry level ... the D3000 is nice. It is very easy to use, not to heavy and can still use the Lenses that all of the Nikon Bodies use. Which is nice.

If she wants a bit more features, then there is the D5000.

Step up from there is the D90 ... but then you are hitting 1000+ for the body alone.

Here is the skinny:
You should take her up to a Photo place (Wolf Camera, Ritz Camera) and have her hold and shoot a few shots with some of the bodies.
Reason -> It comes down to also how it feels in your hands. I shoot with a D80 / D90 alot at my daily job, because the D700 and D3 are HEAVY ... great cameras, BUT HEAVY ... for outdoor shooting, they are overkill.

Back to your wife, small hands, the D3000 is great. If you want to go used and save a bit more cash and still get a good camera. There is the D40x, D60 and D80. The D80 being more on the Starter Pro-Line as oppose to the Consumer level.

Good luck with finding her the camera that best fits her needs as a starting photographer.

thanks.. so you think the d3000 would be good.. and would allow her to grow as well? or should i step it up a bit further to the 5000? i want her to be able to use this camera for a while.. whe has a great eye for photography and would love to get her a camera that she can expand her photography with if so she chooses..

Either body is good. The D5000 just also has Video as well.

When it comes to Photography, it is best to spend the majority of money on the "Glass" ... lenses. The lens is what helps create some amazing photos. The body help in specific situations. For example, you take a Pro D700 VS the Consumer D5000 and you will see a major difference in quality of photos at night and during Fast action shooting. But if you were to take sceneries and nice still photos of people or objects, there isn't too much difference, unless there isn't enough light.

But you a fast lens ... um, lenses with the numbers F1.8, F 2.8, F4 on the side of the lenses are great. Now those do tend to get expensive, but rightly so. Because they are great on all the camera bodies for it's designed company. And to save money here, third party companies make lenses that get real close to OEM lenses. BTW, for you info, on Nikons ... the Tamron company is the next best company for Third Party lenses.
