Canon lens help

I am looking to get a zoom lens, my 18-55mm isn't cutting it for far away shots. I am looking in to two lenses:

Canon Zoom Telephoto EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III Autofocus Lens - Used: 109.99
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...Autofocus.html

Canon EF 28-90mm f/4-5.6 III AF Lens - New: 89.99
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc....html#features

The first lens is a telephoto lens, which would be nice to have, while the second is a wide-angle telephoto.

I am leaning towards the first telephoto lens, but I would like to hear some advice first.

The lens would attach to my Rebel XTi.

Yeah, 90% of the problem with pictures is the person taking them, so I'm not looking to spend too much right now when it won't really benefit me. Figured I could always sell (or even take the hit) a 100$ lens.

while this is true for the most part, but you have to be pretty good at photoshop to pull out all the colors cheaper equipment will not capture. you also have to keep in mind the f/stop. cheap lenses are going to have a higher f/stop. which could be very important, depending on what you are shooting.

Nothing in particular, just can't get anything close to a close-up.

I'll check out that Sigma lens..

the Sigma lenses are a viable alternative, but only the f2.8 lenses. I would try and get an L series lens if possible. The image quality is generally much better than the non-L series lenses. the highest quality lenses are generally the f2.8, but try to avoid the shifting aperture lenses if at all possible (4.5 - 5.6) as the image quality is not nearly what you get from the fixed aperture lenses.

they are expensive though... personally I have a Canon 70-200 f2.8 for that range. I used to shoot a lot of sports and would use the 300mm and 400mm telephoto lenses. they are impressive, but $3-8,000 each!

Have fun!

We have B&H Photo in NYC, which is supposed to be this big camera store.. going to go in there and hopefully walk out with a 100-150$ lens. 175$ would be pushing it, I just booked a vacation so my credit card is being racked up again.. :(
