Its all dependant on what you want out of it. Intake and exhaust...worth it for increased mpg and airflow but you have to keep off the gas or its a waste. F/I not exactly worth it for an everyday driver either.

Has it been worth it......... ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!! It has been such an educational experience. The last time I modded a car I used a strobe light to tune it. Now I need computer. Luckily I have found extremely competent folks when I hit a wall on this forum and else where.

Agreed. I think it's well worth it. You make it what you really want.

How does one judge the "worth" of anything? My opinions have changed on this subject since I first voted ages ago. Back then I was all about having "everything" I could get for my car and having it be both slick and fast. But I was younger then, and also driving around a piad-off car. Now that I have a brand new Focus (yes I still consider it brand new at almost 2 years old-I'm still under 50k miles) my priorities have shifted somewhat. While I'll always be a car-guy, and I'll always be a modder, I am pretty much done with the "tuner" scene. I just want to make my car not so much "unique" but special to me as the driver. I think if you just go and throw parts into your car to impress people, or try to smoke them at a red light, I'd say it's not worth it. If you have $3000 burning a hole in your pocket, sure it'd be nice to turn heads with the blowoff valve on your new turbo setup. But down the road as the car ages and needs to be serviced more often there may be problems presented that you just didn't consider when you were seeing 280+whp dreams swirl in your head.

Human beings by our very nature are modders of everything. It's in our DNA to take something that has meaning to us and altering it to better suit our personalities. We just have to change the things we love. Look at cave paintings. Just an early form of self expression through modification. So while I personally think the modding scene as it is portrayed in the Fast and the Furious and Need for Speed Underground is both not worth it and losing steam, I will always find ways to make my Focus better, if only in my eyes.

When I'm in the process of doing a mod and everything seems to be going wrong, I usually wonder why the hell I even bother. When it's done and looks great and works right, I think it's worth it.

Of course modding your car is worth it. it is a display or your personality just like getting tattoos. but instead of inkin your skin, your displayin it on your car, which people also see every day. ( i am heavily into both if you cant tell yet!!!!)

I think car modding is worth it as well. It is really an expression of yourself and the only limits really depend on how much $ you have to spend on your ride. Even on a limited budget, you can make your car truly your own. Do it....do it now!!

A car is a pretty bad investment unless you're very disciplined about where you buy and for how much and have lot's of time to wait for that great deal.

I'm more interested in my project car as a source of pride and satisfaction. Getting good value for my investment dollars is a part of that equation but it's not the only factor to be sure.

My current build is a 1990 Mazda Protege 4WD with a BP engine that I plan to turbocharge. I'm shooting for a car that's fun to drive so fun is the return I'm looking for from this investment. The pride and satisfaction happen on their own as long as I make good decisions and do good work.

Edit-It's worth mentioning that car is seldom a good financial investment, but it can become a truly horrible investment.

if you have a car worth modding by all means go for it. but your not going to turn a Focus into a "race car".LOL
