MPG poll

I thought out of curiousity I'd start a poll to see what kind of mpg everyone is getting. If you are getting around 30+ mpg could you please reply with the things you did or methods used to increase your mpg. I've filled up 3 times so far. The mpg for the tank of gas from the dealership is not accurate as I don't know for sure if the trip miles were on the tank.

Rounded to the nearest 10th.
Fill up---MPG
0---------????
1---------24.4
2---------25.7
3---------Still driving on this tank.

I up shifted a little bit later on fill up #2 (between about 2750 and 3000 rpms vs around 2250 give or take 200 rpms.

ethanol is about as good for mpg as water also snags some hp's from my experiance. Never understood the compromise w ethanol. Suposedly makes airborne emissions lower but i read in ealy 2000's that high concentrations have been found in ground water. Back to topic- In a conservative drive i can pull 30-32 mpg [drinking]but hard to stay low in the rev range i use gas for fun so its not something i think about

That's with about 6-9 miles of city driving and the rest all highway a bit over 52 miles highway

I think I'm going to try to attempt to break 50mpg when it gets warmer
(requires you to drive like a granny though [if not slower [nutkick] ])

Anybody known to hit 50mpg?

Best I've got is 46 but it's typically in the low 40s. Maybe after LaborDay when the fuel converts to summer blend?

As a side interest, been running a check on the computer display, found it's averaging ~5% high.

34mpg

Well I drive a 03 SVT and on loooong trips.. I can squeeze out 34mpg with the cruise set at 75, not bad at all I think. But in town.... um yeah [driving] not so good [burnout][headbang]

out of the 13.2 tank when i guess 11.2 has been used the light comes on i was still pulling about 258-262 at the check gas light with stock engine and cold air

now with the most common bolt ons,(Cold air.4-2-1 long tube,2 & 1/4 catback and flex) i recently changed: fuel filter, spark plugs and wires out and.............

one full tank so far i've gotten after upgrade or replacement

265.1(thats with mostly 80 degree weather no humidity or rain, a/c on,and heavy on the pedal on the on & off ramps and some red lights no speeds above 75mph highway)

thats 23.7 mpg average being hard on the car vs my old average of 258(23.03 mpg) and that was stock with cold air being nice to the car

i'll repost on the tank when im light on the car(below 3500 ATx shifts light on the pedal)

I drive a 2003 Focus ZX 2.0 Zetec DOHC, with a 5-speed trany.
I drive pretty much all highway,
I set the cruise at 65mph (always)
I drive 50 miles round trip five days a week (we drive the wifes mini van on weekends).

I bought the car used a couple of months ago and I was figuring on around 32 to 34mpg. When I bought the car I got around 25 to 26mpg. So I starting working on tuning it up, so I replaced,
Spark plugs,
plug wires,
fuel filter,
air filter,
PCV valve,
Changed oil and oil filter (5W-20)
Changed trany oil, Ford Synthetic manual trany oil,
Crank case vent filter,
Tried a couple of tanks of gas with gumout injector cleaner,

I've tried and tracked 10 FULL tanks of fuel, I ran each tank from full to at lest the low fuel light came on.

So, to say the lest I'm not happy with the fuel mileage. My old Taurus got 25mpg, it had EVERYTHING! V-6, PS/PB/AC/ DOHC, climate control/ ect... So I buy a compact with the thinking I could get better gas mileage for a work car??

I have to agree, with primarily hwy miles and 65mph cruise, that mileage is deplorable. I concur with you're initial thoughts as well in that I would have expected low to mid 30s with that driving regiment.

How is the oil level doing? Even if it's not burning, I'd check compression. I'd also look at decarbonating with either the MMO soak trick or water through the throttle plate.

did the ground on the throttle body before this last tank... before the tb i was getting 24-29 mainly above 25.... well see now.......

I just finished up tank number ten,

29th Street Gomart
89 oct (plus grade)
341.8 miles,
11.71 gallons,
29.18 mpg (I almost broke the 30mpg barrier)

Tomorrow I'm going to stop and pick up a cleaning kit for the K&N air filter that came with the car and put it back in and see if it helps the gas mileage on tank numeber eleven.
