I think there's rather long-standing criticism of EPA mileage estimates. Unusual about the VWTDs though, I thought generally the numbers Overestimate what most people get.
It would seem odd to only get about high 30s in a diesel, since certain gas cars can get that with clever tactics and a feather-foot. I always thought they were up closer to 50, but I've never had one so I couldn't be sure.

|Tbones00SE||People are getting way less than advertised with Hybrids because they are driving them like normal cars instead of like hybrids. The two biggest factors are hard acceleration and hard braking. With hard acceleration you force the gas engine to engage much sooner than it should. With hard braking you override the regenerative braking system and instead you use the conventional braking system which just wastes the potential energy as heat.|

I've heard people on the news complaining about the Toyota Prius too that is doesn't get nearly the mpg advertised. Most people get half what's advertised.
I think their mpg numbers are based on going down a 10% grade hill at 50 mph.
Oh, and the Scion xB looks more like a Van than a station wagon.

Those numbers for the VWs are completely unrealistic! If I was only getting 35/42 in my TDI, I would be friggin pissed. Once they are broken in a bit, consumption drops a lot, with a majority of people getting 50+ MPG combined city and highway.
And heck, my nearly 5 year old VR6 GTI gets about 34 MPG on the highway... The Focus is, umm, not quite as good.

The Vibe and Matrix are classified as Station wagons... lol
"Among station wagons, the manual Pontiac Vibe and Toyota Corolla Matrix are tops, each with 30 mpg in the city and 36 on the highway. The most fuel efficient minivan is the Honda Odyssey, 20 mpg in the city and 28 on the highway."
