Yes you can change them to any color. Paint the needles any color you would like and you could paint the inside white housing the same color or a glossy chrome. When painting the white inside housing the same color or a darker color it makes the light come off a bit more dark and rich instead of flooded.
As for a purple, I have attempted to use a black light inside the housing with dark purple UV reactive paint and it was all good until the tiny black light burnt out. I have also painted the needles blue with dark blue or black housing and blue lights to produce a cool purple found in a lot of VW gauges.

Are those 3 LED's the only thing that illuminate the entire dashboard?
Did you put diff. led color bulbs for it? Or you have the 3 red ones only?
I am kinda confused whit this.

|SuperFlea||Nope... the screen has the green filter... (paint/color) Yes, the bulb is smaller than the rest of the bulbs, or in this case, the main bulbs that light up the entire cluster.|

It MIGHT be possible to get them a different color. If you use a Kandy paint than you might be able to get a different color. Kandy paint is transparent..

|ampedout||The orange needles are blow molded orange though, regardless of what color you paint them they will show up orange. They are orange all the way through.|
