|elitekorri||You don't need the crank TDC... just turn over your crank with a screwdriver in your cyl1/4 until you see the screwdriver hit TDC (top dead center). Don't move your engine... lock your cam in place horizontal.... put on your cam belt.... tighten your cam belt... tighten your cam sprockets... done! (now just dyno tune your cam retard/advance to get best #'s)|

|xxltall||I had the one at the end of the cams. I just used a piece of flat stock I cut to the right size. The crank TDC peg how can I get one of these?|

|crazymechanic||there's actually two timing tools, though if you're real careful you only need one. one is the cam alignment bar, the other is a crank TDC peg. you remove a blanking plug from the block and put the peg in and turn the crank over until it hits the peg. now you're at cyl 1 TDC|

|crazymechanic||when the cams are properly lined up and the crank is at TDC cyl 1 compression, the intake cam should have the cylinder 1 lobes pointing toward the back of the car, and the exhaust cam should have the lobes pointing toward the front.|

Some more info and questions that can shed some light.
Yes this is on the ZX2 Escort not a ZX3 Focus. You guys seem to know more about the motor than most the other Ford small car guys and this is why I ask for your help. I have been trying every Form forum tiring to find the proper way.
Tension is correct. That is very easy to do I know that is good.
I thought I had all the timing marks set but the instructions had some different looking marks. I would like to find a way to verify the marks if possible.
I did turn the motor over by hand to see that I would not crunch a valve and it does run and does not show any sign of crunching, thank God.
Some people in the other forums have said to stick a screwdriver in cyl #1 and find TDC that way rather than using the marks.
When the motor is in TDC what should the cams look like? How can I tell if they are in the right spot?
How can I reset the VCT?
I sooo wish I had the money just to take it to someone to get it right but it really was not that hard of a job except for this problem.

|crazymechanic||actually, if the timing procedure isn't followed correctly, the VCT will not work properly. the VCT depends on the pulley being in a certain position when it is tightened to the 0 degree times camshaft.|
