We went round and round and round about getting a FWD or an AWD. After some hard thinking, I've owned a 2wd vehicle for the last 20yrs I've lived and drove in the Louisville, KY area. Both urban (downtown), and suburban (Spencer County) localities. I could count on one hand the number of times I wasn't able to get where I was going with 2wd. This counts the 5+yrs that I had a lowered RWD S10 with 275/45/17 summer tires on it. We're grown successful adults now with vacation days and a big arse TV. If the weather gets bad enough our Audi can't make it out, then there's a good chance we should just stay home and watch TV.

The only other reason for AWD IMO, is for getting a boat OUT of the water at the ramp. With a decent set of tires, and traction control we shouldn't have a problem. Especially considering that the $4-5k we saved over the AWD models we found (not counting the continued fuel economy penalty when we aren't in bad weather), could easily afford us an older body style Tahoe for towing and winter duties, and just sit around the rest of the time.

That portion of the decision alone represents a major paradigm shift in my thinking. We'll see if I regret it within the year, or if I never think of it again.

None of them left me walking, but at 34k miles, they were leading to a lack of confidence in the car.

- rattling door panels (rebuilt/repaired twice by dealership)
- Front speaker rattles at volume above 7 (I drove a LOT with the sunroof open and the windows up on the expressway. I could enjoy the fresh air or the stereo, not both)
- front suspension clunk ("fixed" twice under TSB)
- Broken/Failing motor mount (rattle during cold start, and during clutch engagement while backing)
- Front windows didn't work below 20deg F (Service center couldn't figure this one out at all )
- Leaky valve cover gasket (discovered three weeks ago, hadn't been to service yet for this, but kinda amazed they didn't find it during oil changes, it was significant)
- Sunroof would randomly "not close" (far too random to bring up to service)
- Throttle Body failure causing dangerous loss of power (repaired at 12k miles or so, no symptoms since, but traction control was always flakey on fast 1-2 shift, and I think the TB wasn't the initial root cause.
- clutch engagement was weak after stop/go driving. Would slip quickly and easily if pushed even a little.

Like I said, none of them would leave me walking, but they all agravating on a daily basis. The decision to drop the car was sealed when I had to open the door on my 18mo old car to go through the drivethru at McD's. Nothing better than spending $21k on a car to have one of the main features stop working just outside of a year into ownership.

In the end, we probably should have not bought the car to begin with, so it's not entirely the cars fault. When our 2003 Yukon started failing us with electrical problems at 200k miles, we should have went ahead and pulled the trigger on a Traverse then. The Focus wasn't a good fit for us, and the quality problems (which I am guessing are more a function of it being a first production year of a model, than being a poor quality car) just made us both tire of it REALLY quickly.

We're at 138k......bought it at ~80k actually. Definitely over-engineered which leads to some interesting trouble shooting. I do agree they are sensitive though.

I would stay away from all VW-AUDI products if you are planning to keep it after 80K miles. They give you headache in many ways.

They are very comfortable and fun to drive, but very sensitive vehicles.

Darthenstein Very nice Traverse! Our Uncle Sam is helping us get a new Buick Enclave (replacing an '03 Blazer) in a couple months.

2006 A4 2.0T Quattro Sedan

Decent car, pricey to maintain when it breaks, but doesn't break often, so it's a wash really. Handles nice and has decent power. Doubt I'll own another one, as I'm most likely moving back to GM products as time passes.

Overall we had to put a bit more down than we wanted, but it all came from the unexpectedly high tax return we got, so no hit to our savings or debt reduction plan. Payment went up by ~$20/mo, term was lengthened by about 6mo, so overall not a ton more cost out of pocket than the focus. Insurance was quoted as a $4/mo decrease, so not much change there either.

We decided to let the Focus go instead of the Audi for two reasons. The Audi is MUCH closer to payoff, and we're sneaking up on "even" with the payoff vs value, the Focus wasn't even close, and was plummeting faster than a safe chasing Wil. E. Coyote down the canyon. The second is the lack of confidence from the Focus. I complain about the Audi a lot, but in the end, it really is a better machine. Maintenance is higher, but I think if it's maintained even remotely well, it will last us into the 250-300k mile range. The Focus is already having issues it shouldn't have at 35k miles.

The dealership experience this time was surprisingly easy. We calmly negotiated the price of the truck with the OWNER of the lot, as well as our trade value with him as well. He was reasonable on both values, and we knew we were close to being "on target" going into the deal anyway, so a little wiggle room from both parties and we struck a deal in 10 minutes time. No more talking to a manager, to talk to a salesman, etc. We drove 45miles to Frankfort, KY to buy it as the lot had 6 Lambda platform trucks on the lot. This one struck the best balance of price/options/miles. There was a spectacular 32k mile 2011 Acadia, but it was $9k more, and wasn't as highly optioned as the one we got...it was AWD though. They only sent our credit apps to two credit unions on our request not 101 different banks, and we settled on a "new" credit union in town. Best rate was 3.75 with direct deduction, so we were good with that. Overall, the experience was super easy, and they were great to let Grant run around the showroom like a crazy child (as much as we tried to contain him). Overall, about 5 hours from door to door, and that includes 45 minutes of driving each way!

At the end of the day momma's happy, so that makes the rest of the family happy.

Many thanks to those here that have helped me work through various problems, and issues. The MK3 platform is a good one, it just wasn't for us.
You guys will enjoy it. Great 36 motor. I would of gone w/ the awd GMC or Buick. Chevy had to take over for the Saturn version, since Saturn is done.

I'm just talking in general not weather related stuff. I can't imagine it would be very good in the snow. I can't imagine snow at all as I have very rarely seen it
