FocusedOnSVT Most annoying problem?

Rust in hard to reach places.

And the fact that I owned it for a month before the engine blew...and it took 3 months to find the right stuff for the engine swap...

diamond_jigsaw After owning it for 3 months now, the most annoying thing to me is that I can't figure out (if the option exists) how to make my bluetooth connection the default media option when I get in the car. It always starts to SYNC media line in, but I always have to make the 6 stupid button pushes to get my phone to play >_<

sailor Dumped the White Lith. altogether in favor of spray penetrating grease, for the locks I only use some on the latch.

Did use a massive amount on WD40 from the inside of the door when the driver's side stopped working properly (pull out far before anything happened, almost couldn't open). That solved the problem for a few years now.

I agree. Despite the misuse or abuse, the design did not work out well for many or most of the MK1 owners. Misuse, wear, dirt, no lube, whatever the reason or excuse, the design failed on day-one and maybe more so as it aged. Got my 2004 in 2013, so I do not know how it felt when new or get to feel it get worse as it aged.

I could feel the mechanism struggling on day-one (2013) and quickly adapted a tender-touch and always/mostly "pulled exactly perpendicular to the door" in order to help it; not hurt it.

I also use two fingers and thumb, but sounds like yours is much better than mine and a couple others I have felt. I feel a shift in The Force and might have to reconsider my opinion about the whole thing. I thought all 2000-2004 shared the same exact design; and all or most had the same bad feel; maybe not. hmmmmm.....

I have had several people "give me that look" or said "unlock it" when the doors were already unlocked. In defense of MK1 Foci, I have not got inside the door to rework/lube them; only lubed from exterior access points.

Edit: first used silicon spray; very small improvement. Second and last effort was some White Lith spray; very small or no improvement.

My numbro uno complaint is the door handle design. I have felt other MY1 foci and they all suck. Too much force is require to open them. No wonder we have people here breaking em' and having to replace parts of this mechanism.

Every time I open the door of a different type of car with similar age, it freaks me out how nice and butter smooth their door opens. Mostly on two other cars that I drive; a Mitsu Outlander and a Toy 4-runner.

Please do not tell me to lube em'. Need a fricken Tylenol just from typing about this subject. Pft!
Hmmm. I can open mine with one finger, in fact I grab it with two fingers and pull out with my thumb. Now that I think about it a lot of Foci in the junkyard are hard to pull, I thought they just got that way from junkyard life. Sometimes I think they're locked until I feel like I'm gonna yank the door off like the Hulk.

That's a good theory, my friend was discussing how previous owners scratched up the paint behind his handle, and how people must use their whole fist and claws to open a car door. He showed me how he opens a door, with his fingers. If people use a fist then they're more inclined to use arm muscles (and the UP motion) and not weaker finger muscles.

Breaking handles was an epidemic in with fox Mustangs which had the generic parts bin 80's handle, I had fox for six years the handles were smooth as butter, didn't break one. Like with the Focus I used just enough force to unlatch the door, then open it with the door frame (or door if its frame-less, pulling on a window will give you window problems). I've seen some people let the door bungee back on the handle when they open it too.

My old mk1 locked me in once lol. Had to climb out the passenger side. Went around, opened from outside, never did it again.
