DJslurp1200 I test drove a 2013 mazdaspeed3 and wasn't really that impressed... but I imagine a tune would do some good wonders with some additional mods...

Either way... I vote for the Focus ST and honestly if it were somehow possible I would try to somehow reverse retrofit the regular focus front end only because it looks better IMO than the rounded out ST front end... Just my $0.02

03CardinalRedSVT Ok drove both today and was very pleased with both cars in performance, so here's my take on both

focus st
Pros
Boost was excellent
Sounds great both driving and idle
Handling was better than speed 3
Interior was phenomenal
Recaro buckets were comfy
Shifting was a breeze
Overall appearance of the body is satisfactory
Back seat room is good for my little girl

Cons
It was a bit sluggish on take off (maybe from the car sitting for a while)
Clutch was weird feeling
The rims look horrible

speed 3
Pros
Take off was exceptional
Boost was decent
Clutch felt normal
Brakes were good
Enjoyable ride
Sounds good at idle

Cons
Gas mileage
Shifter was a little stiff
Interior needs to be updated
Cabin room is just small for my size
The front smile
The under steering

The focus has a good balance for being an everyday drive and fun to go to where the speed 3 is just fun to drive and go. Since I'm not doing too much goofing off and wreck less driving anymore I feel the focus st is a better fit for my commute and still having fun doing it.

Montag Mazda still makes a three speed? Is it a column shift? Three-on-the-tree FTW!!

03CardinalRedSVT True but ford still has 3% ownership in Mazda so you are still contributing a small portion to Ford

I'd consider the 2008 Mazdaspeed3 over the current ST. I really liked the way it drove. Oh, and it had windows. The current Focus ST is a submarine when it comes to rearward visibility. I'd have to test them both again though, if I were in a serious position to buy something.
If you're that concerned about rearward visibility take the outboard head restraints out when you don't have a passenger.

The Focus ST is much more polished and makes a more civilized daily driver, the MazdaSpeed3 is a lot heavier on the torque steer and the interior looks older because it is a lot older.

03CardinalRedSVT Well I'm in a serious position to lease another car so I have 3 months to fully test both cars
