SVTFocus noob Okay got it working here are some more pics.

Here is the "new" engine I got for the 3rd build from a member in NY, as you can see the KS was in correct spot and I thought I knew better and moved it when reassembling.

Here is the 3rd build aftermath of blowing head gasket, as you can see KS is too far down on block over by the filter instead of up towards top center where it should be.

And finally as you saw before above is the aftermath of build 4 and the KS being in the wrong spot yet again.

Ultimately lesson learned here ask questions and double check your work and you will save yourself a lot of headaches, time and money. I myself am upset with it but I manage to look at the glass half full, and know I could beat JUST about everyone here in a engine swap race and that I now have every bolt and wire memorized as to where it goes when doing an engine build . Hope this helps anyone in the future!!!!

SVTFocus noob Hey guys as we all know I found out the KS was installed wrong from latest build, and hoping Tom was right about it being the problem, I was just telling myself that it had to be it and that is why it blew 4 times in a row. Well did some digging and got solid concrete evidence that he is right! All 4 builds my KS was in wrong spot way farther down on the block rather than right up next the engine block heater towards the top center of block. Also noticed when my first build was leaking coolant at engine block heater no one noticed it on here either lol! Also a side not Tom is now asking his customers that do engine builds/ swaps if they are re installing the KS correctly after this whole ordeal. He's already saved one customer I hope my build thread saves anyone else!!! So without further ado lets all sit back and laugh how one sensor can cost a man over $2000 in engine rebuilds and to slow down sometimes and ask questions about things you're not so sure about!!!

Here is the engine when first pulled you can see how clean the KS boss is from when i removed it wish I referred to this pic a while ago!

Here is the first time I put fresh engine build together you can see where I circled the KS and the wire that it is WAY TOO low on the block

Here is 2nd engine build and it placed wrong

I will upload the rest once photobucket works for me

prerunnerwannabe Daaang 5 rebuilds 0.o

But I'm really happy that you and Tom were finally able to figure out what the problem was! At the end of the day these are machines we are working with and eventually you'll be able to figure out the problem.

Keep it up!

Knew I had it laying around somewhere, above is pics of studs lined up with their measurements I recorded on phone while measuring with micrometer The top number "4.903" is what the spec is that I got form ARP tech

All painted up and decked from machine shop

Step 1 install KS lol

Had pistons weighed since I was mixing batches turned out OG set had the oddball so went with 4 closest in weight obviously

got to a good stopping point tonight, need to get ready to waking up early for next 2 weeks, so more pics and progress to come tom!! Should all be done by tom, but will still have to wait, since sending new Cyl Head off to Tom to get valves adjusted. Also on a side note measured my old ARP head studs and stretched 7 out of the 10.... glad I ordered new ones!!!

SVTFocus noob Here's how I had it...

Here's the KS IMPROPER

Here's where it SHOULD be

When I reassemble I will get a better pic for anyone who ever is wondering.

SVTFocus noob Tom glad you explained it a bit better, you are right you were reading it correctly however the KS was reading incorrectly due to location. Hope this shuts all the Tom haters up and they can hate on me for being a jack@ss and not placing it correctly.
Tom I'm hoping to have it all back together by next weekend and get the 500 mile break in knocked out. I'll send you a 5 min idle and 5 min cruise as well once its running.

1turbofocus Lets clarify a few things , I wasnt reading the datalogs wrong actually was reading them correctly its the information that was in the datalog that was incorrect

Somehow the knock sensor had been moved from the stock location at the very top of the block around Cly 2 to all the way down to the oil filter area which moves the sensor from reading 100% of any knock to reading maybe 10% of any knock

On top of that it was on a boss which looked to be about 2 inches stuck out from the block further adding to the problem where in stock position it is almost flush with the block

What this did was filter the harmonics to the knock sensor making the logs look like he didnt have any spark knock through the knock sensor and allow for more timing to be added through the knock sensor automatically , thats what the KS is there for

What was actually happening was there was to much timing being added through the knock sensor and caused the head gaskets to blow

The way the KS works is , If it senses harmonics / Knock it removes timing , If it senses no knock then the ECU sees this and will allow timing to be added automatically , in his case that was not good

On a boosted engine it only take 2-3 deg to much and its over

We were on the phone talking for about an Hr this time before we talked about the KS and where it was , Maybe I should of asked about it sooner I dont know

SVTFocus noob Well gents Time to resurrect this old thing, after all there is a story to tell here! So as of right now I am on my 5TH REBUILD yea I know...No you don't know what's wrong... want to guess what it was? Too bad I'm going to tell you. So as we talked about before to get deck checked I did that, yes cyl 3 was warped but NOT becuz it was before initial engine blow my machinist even had it in his notes the deck was good and had no reason to deck it. So the Deck has been and always will be good, it's there at his shop now waiting for him to go into work on Mon and deck it(new block from the 1st one). Now onto the head studs, I've reused them 4 times, I bought new ones becuz why not at this point. I was only able to measure them to the 1/10 of an inch and all were in spec according to ARP tech. Now onto the real problem I've dragged you all on long enough.... Knock sensor, yes simple and STUPID as knock sensor placement, it is GOOD but NOT in the correct position, I've been installing it in wrong spot since A1 Day 1. Hell I've got pics to prove and will upload once I recover photobucket account. But ultimately due to my ignorance Tom was reading datalog's incorrectly (NOT HIS FAULT, to all the haters) so the timing was too aggressive and the gasket is first point of failure. Once I get block back I'll get some good pics of it all going back together for everyone and take a solid picture of knock sensor this time so it can't be f'd up this time lol. Thanks for following hopefully it all pays off and I have one bad SVTF on the streets. When it did run and did WOT pulls before blowing that 18psi felt GREAT at only 4500ish rpm.
