TerryB I haven't gotten any response yet. I ask about any mechanical diagnosis, how long the problem existed, any additives put in, and if the fans ever came on during their ownership. I probably scared them away with the questions.

iminhell I'll 3rd the fans.
For the money, don't ask too much. And being they've only had it 4 months they won't know shit about the car.

Buy the car, make repairs and either drive it or sell it for profit.

amc49 If radiator fan resistor is bad you have NO LOW FAN, only high, could easily be that or a relay. Pull the resistor connector at top of shroud and look for melting. Turn a/c on and if low fan doesn't come on then again resistor or low fan issue.

Problem should be easier to fix than other overheat issues.

Be very careful, you have no idea of if they have severely overheated it to yield headgasket at all. That can be done sitting at a stoplight.

TerryB Yes to the first statement. Heats up at idle, and cools while driving. They say the had the car for about 4 months. I'm only at the emailing stage right now. I'll throw some more questions at them. Especially if any maintenance was performed.

Magus2727 Lets see heat up at idle and cools down under drive. You mean it over heats at idle and cools to normal operating temp while driving. or it heats up to normal temp at idle and over cools at driving speeds?

Given the first (over heats at idle):
The high low fan resistor may be broken and is only doing low speed and is not enough to cool down with out the extra air flow.
If not resistor the fans may be on there last legs and just need new electric fans.

Could just need a coolant flush and new thermostat. Do you know if they ever used any fix leak or stop leak type stuff?

possibly bad sensor, coudl use thermal camera or thermalcouple and verify temp or just replace temp sensor.

Looking at a 2002 Zetec with overheating problem.

I've had my 2001 with the Zetec for over 6 years. But, I haven't had any overheating issues. I may be looking at a 2002 SE that the seller says it heats up at idle, but cools down at speed. What's the simplest and worst case scenario ? It's got 162,000 on the odometer and they're asking $1200.00 Seller stated they are " very " negotiable on the price. If I can get it for under $1000.00 with a simple repair, I think it would be a good deal. I've only seen some pics online, but it looks pretty clean. I tried a search, but trying this shortcut for now.
