Fuse 30 blowing No Dash Tail Lights

It's an old thread, but I just had this same problem on a 2005 Focus ZX3 hatchback. Daughter reported no dash lights, no tail lights, no license plate lights. I replaced the fuse, turned on the parking lights, fuse blew instantly. I took the inside rear hatch panel cover off, checked the wiring harness under the rubber tube-like cover from the body to the hatch - no broken wires. Took off the tail light assemblies, no bad bulbs, no pinched wires. I took out the license plate lights - some corrosion, one blown bulb. However, I noticed a lot of bare metal here on the light assemblies and where they click into the plastic trim...there's two smallish holes in the metal hatch for the wires to get back inside. Leaving the assemblies out - I replaced the bulbs, cleaned the corrosion, and replaced the fuse. Everything worked. I cut some skinny strips of electric tape to wrap up the bare metal where it might make contact when re-assembled. Put hatch panel back on. All is working OK. I asked my daughter if anyone had used the hatch that day, and she said yes, a friend had put some stuff in the back and slammed it closed. That must have jiggled those license plate lights just enough to make contact with the hatch frame above.

nickc Does anyone think it is the headlight switch if one side is still working. The 10 amp fuse doesn't blow or the right side 7.5 amp fuse?

Chaddzx3 I seem to have run into this issue also, but it is different. My left side parking and tail lights do not work when switched on, but still works when I hit the left turn signal. fuses are good, rear wiper and right side works. License plate bulbs also do not work. I am going to check the hatch wiring and the license plate bulbs but if that seems to be fine, where would I go from there? 2005 ZX3.

sailor Hatch harness mentioned earlier is always a good check to start with, the most common location for wire problems.

nickc I removed the 2 license plate fixtures, removed the bulbs and left hanging and still blows the fuse. Not sure what to try next? Could this be a headlight switch with only one side blowing out? My thought is if it is the switch wouldn't it blow the 10.0 fuse also?or maybe a short in the harness somewhere in the back that goes to the license plate lights? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

71ChevelleSS check you hazzard switch itself, most of the light circuit goes through this switch

Blowing 7.5 amp fuse

I have the same problem but I blow the 7.5 amp fuse on the left side(2005 Focus)checked everything also(Lights that are out is left front directional, left front marker, rear driving light, and license plate bulbs) I tried removing both rear license plate bulbs and left hanging to eliminate possible short but still blew. The weird thing is with the hazards on all the lights except the licence plate bulbs work which are not suppose to. I think that tells me the sockets are good. Dont know where to go next?

71ChevelleSS ive had the same problem, no running lights or tag lights, but had headlights, everytime switch was turned on, fuse blew. make sure the tag lights are in back words.. that was what was wrong with mine. pull those out, replace fuse, and turn the lights on, if the fuse does not pop, then switch the tag lights around in their holes, i had this issue with mine, but it led to other due to PO's repair... check that out and see what happens

Did you use a bit heavier duty wire? I used wire that is used on Trailer plugs. It's a bit heavier duty then what was in there. I also gave it more slack then it had previously. It's been 15 months and I just opened it to check, no cracks.

Before they had completely broken in half and fused together. (When I bought this 15 months ago, I had to drive 4.5hrs to get, on way home wife was like your lights aren't working. So found an auto zone, the fuse had blown so put a new one in, as soon as step on brake blown. So put a double fuse in just to get home without a ticket. When you stepped on brake, the back windshield wiper would work at same time. )
