CotyM Using apple maps with voice alone... hmm... Sounds frustrating, that's kinda like driving with the feel of the rumble strips...

Also, apples maps are allot better than current nav systems, and since the data is downloaded over the internet, that means it is capable of continuously updating on the fly. And you can imagine it will simple as an iPod in the process.

mac.mogul Siri is voice controlled, but you still have to push a button to make her listen. Newer cars will offer compatibility with Siri while Ford does not offer this integration. If you've got MFT, you're stuck with the mediocre SYNC lady who cannot understand simple english.

Edit:
Besides, it shouldn't be left up to the automakers to make infotainment software. Some of them can barely make cars so obviously their software developing skills are seriously lacking. There is no built-in infotainment software today that works well. They all have drawbacks of some kind. If the infotainment hardware was built to a specification, then the developers who actually know how to make software can take over and make the experience a much better one.

crazy_urn neat gizmo, but what is the point? Most new cars have everything this does except siri, which if you have siri, you don't need it on your dash, cause you can control everything just as easily by voice on your phone, right?

Maybe I am just naive, but I don't understand the need for this.

Didn't Apple used to be the company that came up with new ideas?

Okidoki78 Yeah, I wanted Sync because I thought it would be more integrated (in time) with iOS and other mobile platforms. Kinda disappointing at where its at right now.

mac.mogul It's likely that Ford has a contract of some sort that prevents them integrating fully with Siri and iOS.

It'll happen eventually and I'm sure Ford is kicking themselves for creating the situation they are in.

I mean really, how can you seriously just ignore the most widely used mobile operating system? It's got to be in a contract of some sort.

joecicalese Ford always sticks by their corporate partners. Even Firestone back in the late 90's. They'll ride it out with Microsoft until everyone has long given up on Sync/MFT.

CotyM As a prior apple fan, and a current Android user. I do welcome iOS over the current nav system in cars, provided that all the hardware is either:

a) Provided by apple
b) Approved by apple for full compliance and hardware reliability.

If either of those were to happen, this would be amazing, because if there is one thing apple does right, it is quality and optimization. While as android is stretched over to many devices.

Apple iOS for cars...

http://www.autoblog.com/2013/06/10/a...s-for-the-car/

i noticed Ford was conspicuously absent from the list of automakers shown in the presentation...i hope Ford doesn't hitch itself too tightly to the sync/Microsoft bandwagon.

this direction, whether it be Apple or another tech company, appears to be the future
