amc49 FordManSVT is correct, you cannot know what shim you need until your new part in there and remeasured for preload. May use same shim or even thinner possible. No way to know ahead of time the overall length of new part, they have a tolerance there and it could go either way.

I have the same problem on automatics, use same shim or sometimes WAY off. Depends on how close replacement part is.

SvviftSVT i will try to take pics during the process just because.. and if i learn anything not mentioned.. i will add it to the end of the how to on here... then maybe it could help anybody else out in the future.

SvviftSVT thanks. i have some anaerobic sealant (which is what is recommended in the how-to i will follow)
also need to get red threadlock for the bolts.

FordManSVT You do want to preload the diff bearing but they are preloaded from the factory. Most time putting new bearings in doesn't make a lot if difference because it is the same spec bearing and race as you took out. That's why the stock shim usually works. You can get away without a shop press if you have race drivers and a hammer( swing press). I would get the factor red sealant for the case halfs. That stuff works best.
