SteveTX Thanks! I found this within seconds of starting the search, and 15 minutes later, it was fixed!

pgp01 Does the wire go into a hole or is there just a sharp bend that get flexed when the trunk opens? Can you post a pic of a fixed cable?

stefcio007 +1 rep

I just checked mine and looks fine but I can clearly see where the cable is being stressed. No protection around mine so I can see the individual cable colours.

viper_crazy Just went out and check on my wifes 2016 Titanium. Looks like I might have this problem in the future, too.

amc49 Isn't it so nice to know that the exact same issue that has plagued the cars since '00 has STILL not been fixed, in fact, moved from one side of car to the other and STILL not armored protection there, it actually looks like they have made it even MORE likely to occur on the later ones. In the '60s this would have been fixed after the first year.

Ford is absolutely desperate to sell more wire looms and dealership service there and why they don't fix a problem that has been in existence for 15 years + now.

Per post #22 pic how much do you think Ford pays people to make that harness in the Honduras?

People REALLY should look at the multiple problems Fords now have that they let go on for many years rather than trying to improve them to not be trouble, they simply don't look at that much anymore, less troublesome cars resulting in fewer parts sold. These Focus cars are full of issues like that.

I've had the exact same problem on '00 and '02 models.

FamilyGuyFreek Exact Same problem 2013 Ford Focus Titanium.
Constant False alarms trunk was open every time car is started and moves.
Crawl through trunk to manually open.
Similar Broken wires as photo in last last post.

Cadrems
Trunk light, License plate light.

We have a 2012 Ford Focus Titanium--
Our Focus failed inspection because our license plate light was out. The auto shop told us it was a unit and not just a bulb, that they hadn't seen one burn out before and "generously" offered to replace it for $150.
We politely declined.
I got on the phone to Ford, who told us we were out of warranty (2012 model and it's now Jan 2016). I was told this is not an owner serviceable part. The owner's manual stated the light should last. "for the lifetime of the vehicle". Customer service rep said we should take it to a Ford Service Center to determine the reason this happened. We can't know for sure but her wording made us suspect Ford was interested in somehow finding us at fault--in spite of the fact that this was supposed to be a lasting part----and leave us stuck with a hefty repair bill for what should be a 79 cent bulb. Ultimately this was not the problem but this IS a real Design flaw.

We noticed the trunk light was also not working anymore which made us hopeful that it might be nothing more than a burned out fuse.
I searched for a proper fusebox diagram.
The one in the owner's manual doesnt clearly show the location of the fuse for the trunk light or license plate light. If anyone has this info it might be of great help to someone. I STILL don't know where that fuse is.

Finally we saw this posting and immediately checked the wires in our trunk.
BINGO! Two wires were completely split apart (trunk light and License plate light) and a third one well on it's way.

A BIG thank you to Twenty, whose almost 3 year old posting gave us the answer we needed!

JessicaE Thanks a lot, Twenty! +1 Rep! I looked in my trunk and found that I'm in the early stages. The tape was pulling apart on mine, exposing the wires. It appears that there is enough slack in the routing for mine, but I think 1-2 years of stuffing my trunk a bit more than I should has done a little bit of damage. Some electrical tape will fix it for now; I'll be adding some loom later.

I think the mods should consider sticky-ing this so that other sedan owners can make an easy fix before it's too late for them.

BigJohn826 Is there a way to report this so that Focus owners will be able to get this fixed regardless of if they are under warranty? It is clearly an manufacturing issue.

BigJohn826 My car started doing the exact same thing on Sunday. I knew you guys would have an answer for me!!!!
