sleepyboy Sounds like you have a issue with your wiring to me. My focus would shut off and turn back on or I'd loose the light and gauges but the car kept running. I went through a couple of alternators and by the time I was changing the next one my wires were cooked. I changed them out and I haven't had any problems since. I'd check the wiring from the alternator to the starter to the battery the next time your in there. Alternators shouldn't last just a year, something is causing them to go out.

ctcanadian1 like i said before, each time it has happened my check engine and batt light flickered maybe 5 times about an hour before the car died, and i did check my battery, it is a newer one from last summer, top of the line, has a life time garentee on it so im not to to worried about that, just im guessing the alternator dies a few miles before cause when it shuts down, i loose heat, air, power windows locks and power sterring, thats i drive inthe left lane as much as possible whn on highway, but when the car is stopped, i cant turn it whatso ever, radio ight go for 5 minutes if im lucky,

if the alt was to go bad then there would be dash lights to come on such as the battery light and check engine light along with all the lights slowly getting dimmer and dimmer. its from the alt going bad and the battery taking all the strain. might want to have the battery tested and maybe replace it to.

what you need to look for is lights and stuff randomly dimming and the heater slowing down then picking back up or stoping all together and then turning back on. randomly as in it does it for a few seconds then goes back to normal for then randomly does it agian.

alaskanzx5 yeah they arent junk the second they get there but used none the less. anything electrical can go bad at anytime. something used as a higher chance of that happening.

im just saying it would be smarter to get a new alt with warranty and if you have issues with it then look into the pcm. from my understanding the pcm isnt cheap.

6SPD_soul Parts don't turn to junk the instant they go into a scrap yard, just because they were used doesn't mean they were all bad to begin with. According to OP they all worked for a period of time, and that makes me very skeptical that it's just a matter of alternators failing by themselves.

ctcanadian1 ya i have to do a lot of work to the car this summer, so i will definitely have to look at all possibilities for why they keep dying on me, if i find a problem i can fix it and then buy a brand new alt
