alaxgoaly8 I found a couple of videos on YouTube on what is possible but no instructional vids

From Canada:

This vid shows an interesting set up. It definitely has feniex installed which is a law enforcement build, but the guy is able to switch out of it for an awesome interface. No sound on it, but made me jealous not to have it:

And from Asia:
And this shows the build.

I can't tell what or how they did it but these vids show it's possible at least for android and hopefully iOS with it integrated in the system.

I think if there's a way to get the OS (embedded windows) into something like a service mode we could make some headway... Possibly reinstall via USB with an ISO image? I think this could be a solution if the OS runs from memory and not a HDD.

Or if it's more like a traditional computer, pre-boot settings like bios or CMOS might allow us to boot into a live Linux environment and play with partitions or attempt to install Linux over the imbedded OS (assuming it is installed on a drive).

Lastly, if it's as simple as a HDD hidden somewhere in the car then we could try to swap it for one with a Linux distribution installed and see what it does when it boots.

Might tear my dash apart one day....

I don't think there would be a HDD in the system. It would probably be some kind of flash memory that's embedded in the computer because you never want to put a HDD into a car because of all the jostling about.

Saitek93 If there is just a simple video connector to the small LCD screen, then it would be easy to install a screen like this instead.

Then the backup camera could just be plugged into the other plug, and any time you shifted into reverse, then the screen could turn on the backup camera view. I'm not out at my car to check the size, but it's probably more like a 4 inch screen.

Just to be clear, I'm talking about the regular Sync with the 4" (ish) screen, not the MFT Sync with the big screen and the inputs - if you have inputs under your armrest, I'm assuming we're not talking about the same screen.

Thanks for the info, though.

Shantheman2012 FWIW...
I played around with the inputs under the armrest...and hooked a portable DVD player up to it. The screen does indeed play video...only when in park though. It's not HD clearly...but it wasn't a bad pic. Was kinda fun to play around with.

JeremiahD in case you were wondering, the MFT Sync system is running on Windows Embedded. And many of the connections on the back of the display are micro usb. not sure what the connector for video is.
