I didn't fully inspect all of the options that came on this vehicle. I sure did realize real fast that the car is equipped with 'summer only' 18" tires. Boy do these things suck in the snow... either that or the car doesn't do well in the snow at all.

Last night on my way home the drive was fine since most of the streets were plowed. But I get on my street in front of my house and i see that the driveway is covered in snow and that I will need a head start to make it up there. So i put the car in reverse and decide to give it some gas so I can make it up there. Upon doing so my tires start to lose traction at about 5-10 mph. Barely any speed at all. I tried turning off the TCS which didn't help at all. I just lost traction and then got to spin my tires.

How many of you have the Ti and also live in a place where the snow can be pretty bad? In my opinion this snow storm wasn't even that bad. Only about 4-6 inches and my little focus was failing me.

What winter tires/all season tires do you guys recommend? I might try to stick out this winter but I will need to get different tires for next season.

I went to the Poconos the other day and I was scared shitless as the snow was coming down big time and my car was sliding all over the place. I had to leave my car parked in a parking lot and have someone come pick me up... these tires are terrible. I've never been so scared while driving in my life lol I'd like to think I'm a pretty good driver but I'm lucky to have made it where I did and not hit anything lol

Robert1966 I have the Titanium with the 18" summer tires and I replaced with with Blizzaks 195/65R/15. Yes, I went thinner and the car is an absolute beast in the snow and these babies grip very well on ice. Found out the other night when I approached a three way stop and had no problem getting up a minor hill. Can't say too much for the guy behind me who was stuck and another car that came the other way and slammed into another.

Another happy Continental DWS customer here. Although I don't own a Focus anymore. I just wanted to chime in and say that this is hands down the best set of all-season tires I've owned yet. I'm definitely planning on sticking with another set.

Snow/ice traction is probably about as good as you'll get in the all-season category. But best of all it has great summer traction on both dry and wet roads. Even when it's raining it feels like the rain just isn't there. Sidewall stiffness is also perfect if you really enjoy spirited driving. Overall it's just very predictable and enjoyable all year round.

Obviously you can't expect any set of all-season tires to be better than a set of dedicated winter tires. But I think Continental's premium DWS brand of tires are great when it comes to year-round versatility.

That's impractically wide for most cars. There are aftermarket tractor treads that can fit some cars (Jeeps more likely) and they would turn your car into a snowcat pretty well.

I believe you meant to say diameter and not width.
Cause having too much width is why we (18" tired cars) are all having issues driving in snow.

To anyone looking for a set of tires for snow driving, bigger (wider) is NOT better.
All wider tires do is distribute the weight over a larger footprint area thus encouraging a form of snow based hydroplaning.
Big fat (wide) tires are great for maximum speed cornering on dry pavement in summer.
But when dealing with snow the last thing you want is a lighter footprint .
Raising the ground pressure, by using narrower, but not taller, tires allows the cars weight to sink the tires through the snow to the pavement underneath.
It won't be as good for handling at speed on dry roads, but put some snow or slush on the ground and it will keep going long after the stock size have left you in a ditch.

BTW most of the tire makers have charts up on line that show the tires specs, including the rolling diameter.
So you don't have to be a math wiz or carry a calculator around to figure which size you need to get.

raptor1956 I have a 2012 Ti HB and am running the stock 17's through this winter but plan to replace the tires next winter. I've used Blizzacks before and they were great but I think I'll go with the Michelin X Ice's. I will go with 17's because that's what I have and then the next spring I'll buy a complete set of 17 inch wheels and summer tires with TPMS from Tirerack.

The stock Conti's are OK in the snow so long as there's decent tread and the snow is only a few inches deep, but if the snows deeper or the tread is worn down you're f'd. I can manage with them this year as I'm away from home in a rental car about 80% of the time, but next winter my tires will be up around 35,000 miles and I don't want to go through a winter with the stock tires worn down.
