|WizeGuyDezignz||The Elantra is a horrible driving car, don't even bother with it. I test drove one when I was shopping for a new car (which ended up being a Focus), and it felt like I was driving a boat. Thumbs way down.|

UPDATE: My local Ford dealership quoted me a 2013 Ford Focus Hatchback SE is $19348.04 out the door. It's a 5spd manual w/ my choice of blue or silver.
Is this a fair price? The blue one has almost 200 miles on it though while the gray one has like 15 miles. I am thinking I could try to talk them down to 18k flat otd? Is that impossible?

|JasDmw||Well, I have a 13 with the DCT and am very happy with it. If it's going to be a daily driver, meaning traffic, shfting becomes a pain. Had mine for 4 months now and no issues. Shifts feel like a manual but wihtout the necessary intervention. Am pleased with the mileage, handling, feel of the car and it suits daily commuting well; mine is about 1/2 hour each way. Would have considered the Cmax, as hybrid may be a better choice for commuting, but it's too new and seeing how most of the issues here are with the first year models, I chose to stay away. My feeling is this will be like the last Focus; not good on launch and then over time, very good. Had a 2004 and was a fine commuter car as well.|

Since you are looking at a SE w/5-spd most of the common issues do not apply.
No DCT and MFT, which is where most of the problems have come from in my reading of the forum.
I picked up a fully loaded SE Sport, kinda want an ST now, but I am not looking back. Just over 1 yr and 16k miles, the car has been great.

I bought a 12 model used. (how about that for odd)
its now got 25K on the clock and its just barely a year old according to build date.
meanwhile - its a DCT car and I'd highly recommend it. I personally hate stiring a stick and clutch in city traffic. also IIRC the DCT gets another gear and a better 1st ratio.
Otherwise - appearance the car is holding up great with minor care. Changing out the cabin air filter is a cast iron B though. but so are most cars.
Engine - can't complain one bit. simple oil changes and its chugging on just well. I do put synthetic in it, but that's because I'm odd.
transmission - its also running just fine. yes it will studder occasionally after a dead stop and I think its really realted to set conditions and not mechanical at all. the wife doesn't even notice it, I have to point it out to her. Has no affect on operation, hills, no hills, highway or romping back roads. the DCT runs just fine, I do wish I could change out the fluid in it but again I'm odd.
Suspension - can't ask for more at this price range. It turns bettter than the other cars you mentioned. It brakes better too, and maybe its the seats but I think it rides better than the others to.
MPG - yes it does what it says it will. Driving style has as much to do with results that does the device. granted it rarely goes highway at speeds under 80 but I live in Mexico.
Yes I looked at others but the focus just appeals to me more. Likewise Hatch over sedan. Having been to europe what I really wish I could get is their focus wagon with the AWD kit and the turbo. but I can't have it all.

Also, I love to test drive cars in my free time so here's a quick rundown of my impressions of cars in this segment:
2013 Hyundai Elantra: Slow acceleration and unsettled suspension on the highway but good looking and has a easy to use infotainment system.
2013 Honda Civic: Bland outside and inside, low tech features and noisy on the highway but has a nice, smooth manual.
2013 Chevy Cruze: Uncomfortable seats and has low tech features but quietest on the highway and handsome looking.
2013 Dodge Dart: Strange interior plastics/design and bland exterior but quiet and comfortable on the highway, has a large touch screen and has decent 1.4T performance.
2013 Mazda3: Dated interior design and a bit noisy on the highway but handles nicely and Skyactiv is supposed to net more consistent fuel economy.
2013 Toyota Corolla: A simple car with low tech features, poor cabin materials and low fuel economy but it takes you where you need to go with little fuss.
Versus the Focus, check out the Dart and Mazda3. Goodluck!
