Would you buy a stick
the concept on the DCT is great----its just a shame it doesn't function as it should yet....(so a stick just for less hastle with repeated dealer trips.....)

Not that I've ever been into Porsches anyway, but that ruins any incentive I'd ever have to buy one (a new one, at least).
The day manuals disappear - and that day is coming quickly, it seems - is the day I happily hand over the driving to my Google Car.

I test drove the Focus DCT back to back against an Audi A3. Very similar transmissions but the Audi was much more fun to use. The manu-stick was a better driving experience than the little button. It is hard to believe that they went with the idea to use the button.
I like the DCT/DSG trannies. Been driving my Integra with 5-spd stick for years now but am seriously considering the Focus w/DCT or a used Audi A3 with Tiptronic.

|Joey D||I don't think having a stick makes you pay any more attention, after a few weeks of driving it just becomes second nature and you do it without even thinking about it. I only drive my track car occasionally on the road and I rarely think about what I'm doing with the gears, track driving is slightly different, but even then I typically do it without even thinking.|

I think driving stick does force you to pay attention to your environment. Of course, an automatic driver might pay just as much attention, but the same incentives are not present. For example, when approaching a turn, you have to make a decision about gearing down, so you start looking ahead of time: is someone about to cross the street? Is the 'Do not cross' signal flashing indicating an imminent yellow? Hopefully any good driver is planning ahead, no matter the gearbox, but when you get stuck lugging it out in to wrong gear or make a misguided shift back into first, you learn from the consequences inherent to the manual gearbox only.

I had so many issues with my DCT, Ford couldn't get it right, and the dealer they sent me was worse (Spent over 5 hours waiting to find out not a single thing was done), I'd get the manual. I test drove the manual trans Focus, I can drive the car smoother than the DCT can drive itself.|

|RonMaiden||Ford should've had something better than the dumb thumb button to change gears with and either should've had paddle shifters or a straightforward manu-stick shifter. My mom had a '07 Miata and that was actually a fun shifting 6 speed and never had any silly quirks or hic-ups.|
