Here's your cable adjustment How-To for your type of shifter. Now in 02, there might be some vehicles that were the later Tri-Ax design, so if this doesn't look like your shifter base- then we need to know. The adjustment procedure is different.

First make sure the adjuster tabs come up on your new cable
In this picture one is wrong (black) and one is right(white). On the new cable they can get a little sticky so you may need to wiggle it a little to get it to come up. When mine were like this it wouldn't go very well into first; it would only engage first when coming from second.
Then grab a buddy and adjust the cable. Keep adjusting the cables and having your buddy try the gears until it is right. You can try the neutral method, (have your buddy hold it in neutral and you adjust the cables 'til the shift towers are vertical), or you can use the fourth gear method. Link is here

'02 ZTS linkage adjustment
Hey guys... Can you help me out with this issue?
I'm sorry about the constant posts of different issues. I'm trying to make my car last as long as possible while I still pay it off.
Initially, I couldn't shift from any gears into neutral or any of the other gears, so the linkage needed to be replaced. Did that... Done.
Now I'm having trouble reaching one of my gears. I cannot reach gear #1, but I can reach #2-5 and R. So that tells me I need to adjust it. The question is which one...
Based on my understanding from the Chilton manual:
the white end is the shifter.
the black end is the selector.
It tells me to adjust ONLY the shifter, but I think the problem may be the selector because it doesn't allow me to go far enough to get to gear 1 due to the space limitation on the lever's ball.
I'm not sure if I should go against it and adjust the selector or just blindly adjust the shifter because Chilton said so.
Oh... I have a 2002 Ford Focus ZTS 5-speed Manual with MTX-75 transmission.
