Well, you didn't say which area in the US you're moving to.
However, the cheapest way to get it done (once you and the car are in the US) is:
1) to look on www.craigslist.org for taillights (it's nation-wide very well known site for used stuff; puts you in the direct contact with sellers)
2) go to a junk yard
BUT, all that said, the best way is to just leave your car as is, because the amber signals are perfectly legal in the U.S. In fact, half of the cars have them in amber (all imports 100%).

Are you doing the same thing vice versa - taking your car from Europe to the US?

|toxic_waste||I'm looking to do the same but swap euro for us, I read that if you swap out the light clusters complete with the bulbs/bulb holders & a short section of the wiring it makes it easier to re-connect everything.|

Thank you! I've actually came to the same conclusion - re-wire. I've read the write-up - I'm sure it'll be very helpful.
Last time I looked at Euro taillights, I didn't notice that they didn't have the reverse. The agent (a very competent local guy) that I'm talking to about omologation/registration has a I-gen 5-door, and when we went and looked at it, I noticed that the reverse was on the bumper.
I'm friendly with the wife of a local body-shop owner, and I already have a set of taillights from a 5-door, the same year as mine. Unfortunately, I didn't ask them to remove the harness connectors and the reverse lights from the bumper.... That car probably went to the press already. Gotta ask her.
The car sails to the North of Italy. I have to get it to the South of Italy under its own power. Probably 500 miles. The police is VERY lax over here. If I just "blend in", I'm sure I'll be fine, even if not everything works. But I do need the break lights to work, in the least.
Therefore, a qestion:
What happens if I just pop in the euro lights?
Do connectors match?
Will break lights work?
Will turnlights work in any way at all?
Is there a way to do a quick fix, so that turn signals and breaklights work without worrying about the reverse? (Something temporary, that one can do in 10 minutes with a pair of plyers, wire-strippers and a few simple wire connectors. I will not be at home and will have very limited tools and resources.)
I am good with tools, and can replace things if I know what to replace and how to do it. But I have absolutely no idea of "how stuff works". Thus the questions, that are probably very stupid for someone who understands things.
I'm also wondering, if it were legal here just to cut a piece of red plastic on original tail lights and replace it with amber piece of plastic from euro taillights; I'm sure I can do some "decorative glueing". Might be easier than re-wiring and hacking into the bumper. I'll ask the inspector about it, and depending on what he says, I'll decide on which way to go.
What do you think about going this way? Will I be able to match the American light bulbs to European ones if I need to replace one?

Moved to the MK1 section
They will fit but you must rewire your car in order for them to work being that they have a separate brake light and turn signal compared to the US version that has reverse lights and the brake and turn signal is on one bulb. How to HERE

Will taillights from a European Focus fit on similar model American Focus?
Anybody has a clue if the taillights from a 2002 5-door European Focus will fit on a 3-door American Focus ZX3?
Looking at them, they seem the same.
