Well, have you looked at it yet? I mean, to see if there's any visible indications of age? Our '02 had 140k mi on it when we bought it & the timing belt was visibly cracked as it stretched over the tops of the cam pullies. You do have a little time to get it done. I waited another 2 yrs & 16k mi before replacing ours.

If the SVT's spark plugs have the same 100k mi replacement interval as our 'normal' '02 Zetec does, looking at the spark plugs may be a better indicator than looking at the timing belt. Why? Because most people sell their vehicles when a major service interval rolls around & they feel the car isn't 'worth it' to keep up on the required maintenance. Since your car just turned 100k, chances are they didn't bother replacing plugs either. And if they didn't replace $16 worth of plugs, then they probably didn't spend the money on the timing belt. But that's just a guess, really. Our '02 still had the original plugs when we bought it & it ran perfectly! When I pulled them out I discovered that the ground (side) electrodes had all worn away to points & the gaps were all about twice as large as spec!

amc49 The teeth can look rough like that after five minutes of normal use. Meaning diagnosis looking at teeth alone is very often worthless. Now the edge stripping on the backside is an altogether different issue................that should not be happening.

sleepyboy Here is another local member's belt we changed out and it only had 65k mi on it.

Like I said, when in doubt change it out.

FLYLOW Mine looked really good from the top... But look how it looked underneath when mat and i took it out

Serp belt looked even better lol

amc49 If the car miles are up there then look closely at the pulley plastic and spin them. The plastic often starts fine cracking around bearing perimeter to break into pieces at higher mileages.

*Z3R0* Yup the guys are right, rather just replace it or find out where the car was serviced and they can check if it was changed or not. I am on 161 000km now and changed mine too, the new belt is very solid and you could see wear and tear on it after i had removed it.

Dont take a chance dude, rather change it!

FLYLOW No way of knowing even if the belt looks new from the outside it can be all cracked and stretched on the inside, trust me it happened to me.

Call the dealer where the car was serviced and they might tell u. Thats what i did. Car fax showed what ford dealer the prev owner took it to, i called and asked, they told me all the service record of the car
