ZXthrizzle05 mine sat the exact same way. the pump sits a little away from the block for some reason but when I put everything back together and started it everything went fine no leaks

Magus2727 Thanks, I could not recall if the machined plate with the recessed screws on the oil pump actually mated up with the side of the block. but after looking at the pump (pictures mostly, my pump is stored somewhere in a pile of parts) and the gasket it looks like the block and the oil pump do not make contact on that surface.

I believe I have the caps in the right order. :-) #1 cap with the arrow pointing to the crank pulley. All Caps have arrow pointing towards crank pulley while going from #1 to #5 with #5 being next to the fly wheel.

I loosened the main cap and used a rubber mallet to gently tap the side of the main cap to see if it would "sit" more flush, but no movement. so re torqued down and will let it be.

Thanks for the help and reassurance for those who helped.

After looking at my disassemble pictures (below) Their is a good size gap between the pump and the main:

amc49 I wouldn't worry if correct cap and arrow facing right. Many engines do that. Fit oil pump up, it will clear all of that. Only full circle thrust bearing caps need to be dead even, this motor doesn't have that IIRC.

Main Cap #1 not flush?

I have had this question for a bit and a recent complete tare apart and cleaning of the block ( got engine cleaning brushes to completely clean out the oil valleys and oil deposits).

The #1 main cap when installed is not flush with the side of the block. Is this normal? When installed and torqued down the #1 main cap (the one right next to the crank and oil pump) you can feel an edge the main cap "overhangs" by a few thousandths. I will measure when I get the chance.

But is this normal? I don't recall when I was doing the initial tare down.
