I've been having this issue with my '12. I bought it used with 31k on it in June 2013 and the grinding began about a month/1,000 miles after purchase. Took it to the dealer about a month/2,000 miles after the noise began and they replaced the clutch assembly. Got the car back and it drove like a dream- it was smooth as silk and the noise was gone. That all started going downhill again about 3,000 miles later. Now at 45k, it's an absolute misery to drive with the harsh jerkiness and noise; I'm almost certain it'll give me whiplash one day. 90% of the time while making a turn in which stopping is not necessary, upon completing the turn and applying the gas, the transmission will be in too low of a gear and will rip your head off while you suddenly accelerate rapidly (while barely applying the gas) and then it will realize that it's in the wrong gear and GGGRRRRIIIIINNNNDDD as it shifts into a higher gear. The grinding is also present 70% of the time in everyday acceleration. The jerkiness/rough shifts/unresponsiveness is 100% of the time. Seriously. And if I'm on the highway needing to speed up- if I floor it, I can literally give it a three count before the transmission downshifts and the car starts to accelerate. Maybe MORE than three seconds. Seriously.
Since I'm at 45k miles now and only have 15k miles left on the shitty 60k mile powertrain warranty, I'm seriously considering living with the horrible transmission until right before the warranty goes out (and taking it to the dealer then) because I know the problem will arise again down the road, and hopefully I can postpone a costly repair coming out of my pocket as long as possible.
I have been Ford's biggest fan and have endlessly defended them, but this issue is turning me sour, and QUICK.

We went that route before and it was utterly useless. I have a relatively local dealer with a good service dep't - it'll be going in there next month.

I'd like to loop in your regional customer service manager to assist. Please PM your full name, daytime phone number, mileage, servicing dealership, and appointment day/time; I'll get the ball rolling.

Hope they get you the new clutch and seals and I hope it fixes your car as well as it did mine!

My Focus has started to make a truly unpleasant grinding noise, mainly when shifting from 2nd to 3rd. It seriously sounds like a bunch of gears are rubbing together - though it's probably that the two clutches aren't properly engaging/disengaging. There's no real shudder or jerking, but it's noisy and doesn't sound good.
Needless to say, it's on the (long) list of things for the dealer to look at when I take it in next month...

|aptech77||I've owned the car for 1800 miles and roughly 2 mo. So far I've experienced #'s 1, 2, 4, 5 and had b, c done and tsb13-04-05. Tonights ride home, 90 mins stop and go and some highway. The jerkiness got worse as the drive went on and 2 blocks from home it started to rev with sluggish acceleration and metallic grind sound after finally shifting to second and third. I wiil be calling dealer to schedule a 3rd trip in.|

1. Mild shudder/stutter on low speed startup/shift.
2. Bog down upon acceleration, even at highway speeds
3. Rolling back at stoplights
4. Clattering noise under hood on low speed shifts
5. Indecisive shifting when gas applied harder
Fixes applied by dealers range from
a. ECU reflashes
b. Clutch replacements
c. Seal replacements
d. Bearing replacements
e. Shift rail replacements
Many dealers have a memo from Ford explaining away many of these symptoms but you need to ask yourelf one question: if replacing the various parts listed above makes the symptoms go away, how could they have been normal ?
Because they DO. (make them go away)
Other websites for you to check are
there are several active threads and literally hundreds of posts about this at the focusfanatics forum, search by the word transmission.
I have seen many people post their problem(s) at Fordís focus FACEBOOK page and get help escalating their case from Ford CS reps who monitor that page.

|aptech77||Last Friday I just got my vehicle back from the dealer after they replaced my whole clutch pack and seals. The first 3 days the car drove better than ever before, but now after 2 or 3 days of work stop and go traffic and driving home for 60 min, the jerkiness of the transmission is back. I've just about had enough of this b* piece of s car. My dealer used a Rev D clutch pack by the way.|

|PratoN||I should mention that's just the clutch kit that's on at least its third version. Last I checked the whole transmission assembly itself was on some crazy high revision like F or something.|
