whynotthinkwhynot You want to know something really crazy---- I'd expect a beefed up CVT to take over drag racing from ATs, MTs, and DCTs. I think it's a shame that only Nissan is still working on those. With the right programming, those should be excellent for all engines in all aspects if it could handle the power. When those first came out, engineers thought that it would be limited to low power applications. It didn't take long before we saw CVTs behind V6s.

whynotthinkwhynot IINM, the DSM DCT is a wet clutch type, and I am not entirely sure that the Dart uses it. From what I read, they were bragging about using a torque converter auto.

Y'know, back in the day (before my day) they had drag racers that rigged up powerful spring loaded mechanisms to get an engine into 2nd without input from the driver. This was something that was needed to make the cars go faster. The automatics had been around for a while, but racers didn't know much about them. Eventually, the automatic became the racing transmission of choice.

The same will come to pass with the DCT. For now, it's quirky and screwed up just like the early hydraulic TC autos. In the future, it will reign over MTs in all aspects of racing more than the AT did.

Dodge Dart, Mitsubishi Evo X and Lancer Ralliart all use a DCT. I would consider them to be pretty mainstream vehicles. Porsche uses it extensively also. And Honda has a couple of motorcycles in their lineup using a DCT with success. There's a lot more out there than just the ones you think of.

ZX4STDoug I wish people would stop thinking the DSG is a "wanna-be" conventional manual trans, because it's not. But in my opinion, in the right application (GTI, GLI, etc) it is the better transmission choice. It produces quicker acceleration times, shifts far quicker than any of us could ever possibly do with a manual, downshifts brilliantly, is very adaptable to one's driving style and will withstand far more abuse without any modification than a stock GTI clutch, in particular those in a TSI engined model. The DSG is good for 450-500 lb-ft of torque, while a stock clutch is toast under mild stage 2 levels of power.

Red Jay 918 personally the only dual clutch transmissions i find impressive are the ones in the Ferrari's (mostly), Porsche's and Lamborghini's. basically the rich, expensive, far out of my reach cars. throttle input on them is incredibly weird from my time moving around some 2012 Focus' and a Veloster.
