raptor1956 10,000km should be fine for both oil and filter particularly if using synthetic. Yes, you can go even longer but since you should be rotating your tires about that point anyway you might as well kill three birds at once. So, changing oil and filter AND rotating tires at 10,000km would be good practice and not particularly expensive.

A good synthetic oil should last far longer than 10,000km, but in my view it's good to give your car a once over at about that interval and doing a more complete checkup couldn't hurt.

Remember to check your other fluids (washer, coolant, brake/clutch cylinders etc. Belts and hoses...

Is that an arbitrary number?

YesMAN Your oil change intervals are way too short. You cite a 3,000 mile (5,000 km) oil change interval with conventional oil. That interval went out with the Reagan administration. It can be roughly 3 times that long with normal driving. With full synthetic you should be able to go well beyond 10,000 miles (16,000 km).

If you insist on using synthetic I would change oil and filter every 10,000 miles (16,000 km) - to stay within warranty - and rotate tires at the oil change and once in between (i.e. every 5,000 miles). Just my humble opinion.

JayDeZ Its safer to just replace the filter. The Motorcraft one only costs $3 or $4 at most stores. It an additional 5 minutes of work on top of changing the oil.

TehMark For the sake of ease you should just change it when you change your oil. Replacing a filter is just as much work as changing the oil.

My question is if I'm only changing my oil every 10,000 km does my oil filter still need to be changed every 5000km as I would have with conventional oil?

The filter still gets consumed at the same rate as far as I'm aware, depending on the quality of the filter it might be safer to still change the oil filter at the normal interval, top the oil back off and possibly skim a sample of the used oil for an analysis to determine how far you could stretch between changes. There have been many discussions about oil changes in the past, but the debate still rages on.
