VanceVEP72 20/20 recently did a story on how inaccurate CarFax can be.

BlueByYou28 Carfax and Autocheck are inaccurate. in 2012 I was in an accident in my last car. Rear end collision and the other driver at fault. I reported to my insurance (Mercury) and since I wasn't at fault, had the other guy pay for the damages through his insurance (Also Mercury). Funny thing is I recently ran my VIN to check it's report and guess what I found? Clean title! No accidents reported.......Hmmm, now why wouldn't that accident not be reported? Shady I tell you!

Here's some more info

HeliHaole The other side of carfax is it can scare you away from aperfectly good car.
If a car was cosmetically damaged ie. keyed, and the fixed properly it could show a large claim, new cars are expensive to fix.

Take Carfax with a grain of salt.

Having said that if the dealer wont give you a carfax, move on

Ox-y-GenIII Good eye. If I EVER buy used again I will be just as vigilant. I had bought a used car previously just on looks since I was young and ignorant. Since, I have learned my lesson.

Hi Kenpo_zx3,

You should check out Ford's Certified Pre-Owned site: http://www.ford.com/certified-used/. These vehicles have all been through a 172-point inspection and comes with peace-of-mind warranty coverage.

If you have any questions, you can contact your local dealership or send me a PM. I'm happy to see how I can help!

Have a great weekend,
Crystal

I agree 100%

In 2002, I purchased a used 1999 Trans Am. The Carfax showed no accidents reported. However, after modding the car began.....collision damage of the front passenger side was found. If the car is wrecked, then fixed in private with no insurance claim, Carfax will never know about it.

It's not 100% accurate. Carfax is only going to show you reported insurance claims/repairs. Minor stuff will rarely, if ever, show up in the report. At least you know nothing major of the car's structure "should" be damaged with a clean Carfax.

mikebontoft carfax can only show what's been reported... they aren't psychic.

glocker My 2002 ZTS had 2 accidents in its life span and neither showed on the carfax. I would always want to see one if buying used but just because it says the car is fine, don't trust it 100%.
