RatherBeSailing I just did this mod to my 2013 SE Hatch with Gen-1 Sync. Thanks to the OP for the instructions! A couple of points:
- Make sure that you're shopping for Mini USB cables / connectors and not Micro USB.
- I used this 3 foot USB Mini Male to USB Mini Female connector
3 feet is the perfect length to get from the Sync box to the glove compartment. No shaving of the male end was required.
- I use a Mini USB to standard USB adapter in the glove box instead of at the Sync box. An advantage of using this approach is that a Ford tech could plug in their Sync tool into the glove box cable with the additional need for another adapter.
- There are two vertical steel pipes that I felt were a bit hot (I had just been driving). I made sure to route the cable away from the pipes. There is actually a horizontal steel rod that attaches to the glove box hinges. If you route you cable on top of that rod and not behind it, you will find that your cable will naturally avoid the 2 hot vertical pipes. Maybe I'm a little over cautious...

Thanks again OP for posting the solution!

jcw122 Thanks again for this mod, gonna be doing it soon!

EDIT: Just finished, very quick and easy. My only input is that there is no reason to use a USB mini-adapter if you already have a USB to Mini USB cable in the first place. I would assert that a USB to USB cable would be unusual to have around in the first place.

ArcticGabe FYI, just a word of caution regarding USB2. Just in case anyone runs into trouble with USB2 devices, here's my experience.

I added USB2 a while back, and it worked great for about 3 months. Then, it stopped recognizing the USB stick. I thought the stick came loose, so I re-seated it in the connector, and no luck. I thought my USB2 cable went bad, so I plugged the stick into the regular USB port, no luck. I thought the stick went bad, so I replaced it with another, still no luck.

Finally, I removed the USB2 cable all together, and the stick works fine in the regular USB port. I tried the USB2 cable in my computer, and it seemed to be intermittent. So it appears that a bad cable will take our BOTH USB ports.

suequipo Hello all, and special thanks to Vrod21. I just got my 2013 SE and added the 2 USB to plug my phone.

My 2 cents:
-To access the ports you just need to pull hard, the pin just comes out and can be reused. (attached is a picture of the pin)

-It is not easy to switch the ports so that the original USB becomes USB#2, the plug has a notch that prevents it form plugging into the other port. I guess it could be done if you get a mini USB extension (male to female)

-The only way I found to change to USB 2 is by voice command, does any other way work?

The conector is behind the climate controls, look uppwards to the rear, the ports look like big ethernet ports, but the mini USB plugs right in.

Squadz Having trouble finding where to put the connector.

I pulled the plate off and now I see everything except where to place the connector. Any high res pictures?

Also when you say USB2 are you saying a secondary USB or the normal USB ports are 1.1 Versions and the one discovered under the dash is USB 2.0?

These folks just want an extra port, either for their phone or for an additional audio source. I wanted to use it to charge my phone, but in the end I used the rear power outlet and ran cables tucked under the passenger side of the console up to the front where I mount my phone. That worked out well for me and it avoids having any cables coming out of the console.
Hi, iAmTitanium -

KeithLM is correct! Vehicles equipped with MyFord Touch have two USB ports.

The USB2 found in other vehicles is intended for dealership use, but owners have been using it to leave a thumb-drive loaded with music in their car at all times.

If you have any additional SYNC-related questions, give me a shout.

Thanks for the info, KeithLM!
