Thanks very much for the reply. Strangely my car also has new (about 4 months ago) tyres on the rear and the fronts will need replacing soon - about 3.5mm of tread left. So your solution sounds promising.
I had started thinking it might be a wheel bearing that needs replacing. Now I think I might just get two new tyres, wheels balanced and tracking checked. As tyres will be needed soon anyway this sounds much cheaper.

So strange on my solution to the ESP.
I needed an MOT and two front tyres, I took the car to my ford garage as the chap who sold it to me said he could do me a good price.
Car passed MOT and the ESP was sorted.
From what I have put together.....
The ESP started to play up when I had the front tyres changed, I then just switched off ESP by going into main menu and either ticking or removing the tick sorry cant remember if its ticked by default.
Then when my tracking had worn out my tyres I again had new front tyres and it just fixed itself.
I would try jacking up the front of the car and take off both wheels. Have a coffee and put them back on.
If this doesn't work go to a garage and ask them to check the wheel balance on the front wheels. They will take off the wheels for you and check they are balanced. This should not cost to much.
Fingers crossed this may fix your problem.

My Focus has started making a noise like this in these situations, sometimes accompanied by the ESP light flashing. All very similar to this thread.
It has only done 35k miles and is about 8 months out of warranty.
Did you ever find out what was causing this?
Did you get it sorted out?
How much did it cost?
How do you turn the ESP off?

The rain stopped long enough for me to check all 4 tires, could not find anything obviously wrong. it is still only on the front near side. seems to be more when i turn to the right than the left if that would mean anything.
Guess its a trip to the garage, for now im just going to turn off esp.

I have not been able to check for any movement etc as it has been raining here. Nothing new with that, at least the weather is working as it should

Agreed - This was my first guess as well, thinking that if the bearing was starting to get loose that air gap could be excessive only when cornering...

"tsssss" sound to me would indicate the rotor is moving/flexing under cornering loads. Typical sound of a stone stuck in a pad, worn pads, rust buildup, improperly TQ'd lugnuts, worn wheel bearing or any other loose part you may thing of attached to the wheel.
Now the fact that the traction lamp comes on, to me that points more towards a bearing issue. There is a specific 'air gap' between the Wheel Speed Sensor and the Tone Ring. This is a fixed clearance. But if a bearing is worn/loose this clearance can move/grow. I can see where this could cause a lamp to light up.
But seems that if a bearing were bad you'd notice it under other conditions.
So I'm kinda at a loss as to what exactly it can be. But the simple things are making sure everything is tight and TQ'd properly. Jack the car up and wiggle the tire from top to bottom, there should be no play at all. If there is, it points to a bearing.
Also make sure the axle stub is tight, something like 233ft/lbs IIRC.

|nilskje||Esp sensors at the wheels = ABS sensors, to me it sounds like different tyre sizes, it take very little to upset the ESP system, it measures differerences it wheel speed.|
