Amen brother, I do stuff like that all the time.................they make fifty different types of plug, mostly to confuse, a good close look is the tool to figure out how it goes together. Dentist pick or hobby tool helps greatly getting in the small space there.
I just looked up several common Ford connectors to buy the metal only online for like 5 cents each, bought several sizes to be able to fix connectors without buying $15-$20 connectors as so many of them are nowadays. Just revamped coil connector on mine for like $2 of parts. Rebuilt radiator fan resistor and connector for maybe $3-$4, $60 part there and not counting connector.

You'll find that many special plugs can be repaired/reused, there is a special tool avail. to remove connectors from the type of plastic plug they clip into.
(difficult to describe, but a common type has a one piece plug that the connectors are pushed into until they click in place from the rear after being attached to the wire. pushing the right tool into the front of the plug unlocks them for repair/replacement)

Cylinder head temperature sensor wire fix.
So I my car started throwing a code for the cylinder head temperature sensor (2.0 zetec) and also the temp gage stopped working. When I went to replace the cht sensor I found that the wire was broken.
What I found out is that you can remove the connector from the end of the cht sensor and take it apart, strip the wires, and reinsert them back into the connector. I was very glad this worked out because I the only replacement part I could find was the whole wiring harness. The only thing is that you need to be careful about taking the plug apart so you don't break the connection pieces. In the end I got it back together and it is working fine :)
