Kipp yeah, if you have lights the entire time, but it just won't start then it very well may be the keys. hopefully it's just a matter of getting them reprogrammed and not that the module is going bad or something weird like that. do you have two keys or just one? if you have two, does it do that with both keys?

whynotthinkwhynot BTW, I almost forgot, if you end up getting a new battery, make sure that your alternator is working by using the electronic odometer trick or by testing the battery while the engine is idling. To use the EO trick: key off, press and hold the odo reset button, turn key ON, continue to hold the odo reset button until the odo reads [test]. Now you're in test mode. You will remain in test mode until you turn the key off again, so you can turn the key to start and drive off with the odo in test mode. Every time you press and release the odo reset button, you will scroll through one of 30 test functions. Some of the ones in the beginning will be very useful- like [leds] that lights up all the indicator lights. You are looking for the one that reads [bat 12.1] or whatever your battery voltage might be at the time. Expect to see about a .2v difference between the reading you get in test mode and the reading you'd get by using multi-meter leads on the battery terminals. When you start the engine, the odo will now display the alternator voltage, and you can watch that while you drive in case you might have an intermittent problem like a barely connected field wire.

whynotthinkwhynot Yep, it sounds like you've got one of those batteries that shows voltage, but doesn't have a charge that you can do anything with. You might even smell rotten eggs near the battery. I have also heard of a 175a fuse built into the positive cable near the battery terminal, but I haven't seen pictures of it. To test for this you'd need to uncover the positive terminal at the starter or the alternator, then use a multi-meter set to ohms or the diode symbol, check it by putting the leads together: it should read .01 ohms or beep, put a lead at the battery and one on the starter or alternator and see what you get. If you get something different than putting the leads together, the wire/fuse is bad. That's how to do a basic electrical continuity test.

amc49 You'll have parking lights but not headlights, they stay off by default until engine starts.

Kipp that is correct, if it's just the ign switch then you should still have dome light, headlights and some other things. Honestly it sounds like there was some damage from whatever accident it was in. You will have to go through and check (with a meter) power connections throughout til you can find the bad spot. more than likely it's a connection going in to the fuse box under the hood would be my guess. electrical troubleshooting is time consuming and can be a pain, but is worth it.

WELDER
No head lights and wont start not so much as a click

I have a 00 Focus its an automatic. When I got it both air bags had ripped out from a wreck in the passed. The car ran great no problems every now and then I would go to start it and nothing would happen I would just back off the key and try again and it would start. The other day my dash lights went out so I figured just a fuse id get it later got to work did my thing, got in and turn the key and nothing not a click nothing. I tried jumping it many times I check all conections battery starter everything plus fuses under hood and inside. Now Im thinking ignition switch but I was told if it was the ignition that my dash lights and headlights should work, is that true? Can any body help me please!!!!
