bumble21 Check the battery first like sleepy boy said and also if the battery is good if you have the oem harness still in there I'd check the positive side terminal for any corrosion and possibly replace it. It was a recall by ford because it would go bad on the 01's not sure if its for other years as well. I was having similar starter problems as you and it ended up being just the connection. All that work taking out the starter just for it to be the connection is a pain.

sleepyboy Do a load test on it to be sure.

Davidt2169 The battery seems fine. All the lights work, they don't die when I turn the key. My charger says it's charged. I'll still take it to autozone to see what they say though.

sleepyboy Check the battery first! Go get it checked out first to make sure it's not the battery. It doesn't need to be in the car to get it checked at Autozone. Then check out the battery cables and connections. Even though I've replaced my starter about 4 times, its rare that they go out. Also it's a pain to replace, it's not in the best of spots.

Davidt2169 So i'll check the starter out tomorrow and replace it

sleepyboy No the coil shouldn't make any noise at all.
10-19-2012 12:49 AM
Davidt2169 That's what I figured. Just wasn't positive.
A friend mentioned the coil maybe also, would that make a popping noise?
10-19-2012 12:48 AM
Davidt2169 And yeah, the cat didn't have anything loose inside it nothing made a noise when I shook it or anything.

sleepyboy Yes it is, that's where the starter is located lol

What you are hearing is the solinoid trying to engage the starter motor. If there is not enough power then it will only click cause it won't have the juice to fully engage and jump the current over to the starter motor.
