I have an '02 that certain flow rates from some nozzles will do it with nothing wrong with the car. Turning the filling nozzle like a 1/4 turn cures it instantly. I think under some high pumping conditions the fuel doesn't drop around the nozzle quick enough and stacks up right there to fill the hole and spit back. Even the way you aim the nozzle tip can affect it, I aim high to let fuel follow the top of the pipe and works better too. Or, at an angle to let it spiral quickly around and down. My '01 car doesn't do it whatsoever.
Play with your filling technique, all I had to do. Of course, that vent must be open.

|Amagolan||My ZX5 has spit back too. I bought a purge valve but when I went to install Ito blew through the old one and it was clear. The canister seems clear too. I think it has something to do with the filler neck itself or the vent tube from the tank. I just don't want to drop the tank.|

I was wondering - do you think the purge valve is open except when energized and yours may be stuck closed?
Because I'm guessing there is no power to it when you are filling the gas tank.

I have disconnected the whole vent tube and cleaned it out even after i patched the hole.
I also made sure nothing was restricting air from venting through the tube.
I made sure nothing could rub against the tube after I attached it again.
Yes I do have a check engine light on which is why Im leaning towards a bad purge valve.

Look up a thread titled "fuel spill" it may give you some ideas.
Can you disconnect the vent tube from the tank and check if it is clear? It had a hole in it? Was something rubbing on it that now maybe has it kinked or pinched shut?
Also I think a bad purge valve would turn on the check engine light. Do you have a check engine light?

I thought that as well. when I moved to Phoenix i had to get an Emissions test done but my car was showing a gas cap light.
so I ran my OBD and it popped two codes i cant remember what they were right now so I jacked my car up and looked at the vent tube and found that there was a hole in tube.
I patched it up with auto grade epoxy, taped around the epoxy and the lights went off however it changed nothing with the gas tank issue im having.

The vent tube isnt venting the air that the gasoline is forcing down causing air to build up and eventually the pressure pushes the gasoline back out.

HELP Gas Tank Issues!
OK I have tired to figure this out on my own but I am not getting anywhere.
my issue is that whenever I try to fill up my gas tank it fills for about 2 seconds and then spits gas back out and bubbles.
then it settles back down and I am able to fill for about 2 seconds more and it does the same thing.
It takes me about 25-30 mins to fill up my tank completely and when I am done I smell like gas all day because of how much my tank spits back.
Also I feel like a jackass when I am holding the line up at Costco's gas.
For a dealership to even look at my car they are quoting me 150 just to analyze the situation.
I am almost positive that it is my purge valve but I want to be certain before I buy any parts.
Has anyone had any experience with this?
Or can anyone give me any advice?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
