Sit in car, doors closed:

1. Turn the ignition from "Off" to "Run" four times in six seconds. Key stops in "Run" position on fourth cycle.

2. Turn the ignition to "Off." The car will chime to confirm that you've done everything correctly so far. Key is still in ignition

3. Press any key on the first remote you're programming. Perform this within 20 seconds of Step 2. The car will chime to confirm programming.

4. Repeat Step 3 with each additional remote*, all within the 20 seconds. Remove key from ignition.

*The remotes should be inside the vehicle during the procedure (eg. all on front seat.)

1. Turn the ignition from "Off" to "Run" eight times in ten seconds. Key stays in "Run" position on eighth cycle. The locks will cycle to confirm that you've entered programming mode.

2. Press any key on the first remote you're programming. Perform this within 20 seconds of Step 1. The door locks will cycle to confirm programming.

3. Repeat Step 2 with each additional remote, within 20 seconds of the prior programming. The locks will cycle after each successful programming.

4. Turn the key to the "Off" position to exit the programming mode. Remove key from ignition.

iowford Hi guys

I've tried this process and had some major problems which I'm going to need some help with!

I bought a 2001 Ford Focus (UK Car) with two keys, one worked the doors with the three button controls and also started the car and the ignition. The other opened the door as a key (not the remote) and went in the ignition but would not start the car (dash lights came on though)

I tried the process of key back and forward 4 time as described on page one of this thread with the non working key and it made the buttons on the previously working key not work. I then tried the working key in the ignition and now it won't start the car either.

I have tried to repeat the process from page one with the previously working key and it's back working the doors with the remote but still no ignition!

The key looks like this:

Nearly resolved - Some help still required

(Left original post as it may help someone)

It would seem that there is some sort of security feature that locks out the immobiliser for a period when a non programmed key is inserted.

Can someone help me make the two keys work the same?

Unlocks car as a key
Unlocks car as a remote
Turns off immobilser so car can start

Unlocks car as a key
DOES NOT Unlock car as a remote
DOES NOT Turn off immobilser so car can start

Leora83 The ignition key has a transponder chip that the car reads in order to start (passive anti-theft system, or PATS). Without the chipped key you are SOL. If you have a key cut it will work on the doors but unless you spend the bucks to get a chipped key programmed to your vehicle, you won't get the car started.
The remote has zero effect on your vehicle's starting ability.

I have the same issue, fob locks/unlocks the doors, and opens the boot lid, but if i attach a key I can't start the car with it, same key attached to the original fob starts perfectly.

sternicka I have similar problem than Hillbagger. I never had any problem programming the key in my focus 07, but after some years I tried to program a new key and it is impossible to enter in programming mode. I folllow the procedure step by step and it's impossible. I did it with all keys I have and the result is the same. When I should receive the "beep" there is a quickly message shown in the frontal panel "steering assist failure" but it keeps less than a second and it disappears. After it, the car never shows me any error message.
I will apperciate any help.

hillbagger Newbie here - so, sorry if I'm diving in and posting in the wrong place. Having tried all of the above re. programming a key fob for my 2008 Focus Style 1.8TDCI - I never get a 'bong' after turning the key to position II x 4 in 6 seconds. I've tried variations i.e. position I to position II / position 0 to position II but still no 'bong' - and red light on dash keeps flashing. I'm normally pretty good at fiddling about with things but this just isn't working for me. Any suggestions gratefully received.
