|duc450||I dunno fellas, I always thought of a "traditional" hot rod to be that of a very early era car that would have been modified by what was available and cheap at the time right after WWII. It just happened that the flathead was the engine of choice at the time. But there were many 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder hot rods in the golden era. But I think ya'll are closer to what people consider a hot rod in the current era. To me a hot rod is something truly crafted by the creator and something that uses no or very little aftermarket parts. Instead of getting parts from a manufacturer a hot rodder would source their parts from a salvage yard or another vehicle. But honestly the only thing that really matters is build your car to fit your style and enjoy it, and I think we can all respect that.|

Old farts are to blame.
They have their fantasy of what a 'hotrod' is, and stubbornly cling to it.
Anything modern in a compact car is a ricer.
Doesn't matter if it pumps out 700 hp, if it is a four banger, it is rice.

I think you're pretty much right on. I think a lot of people have a mental reservation about "hot rods" being a V8 muscle, and no matter what, 4bangers are tuners. In my opinion, its probably because no one souped up 4bangers back in the 70's. Well, comparatively speaking.
That, and I think that the real hot rodders, the ones that even know what an ls9 or a turbo350 is, know what a port and polish is, know how to adjust gearing, and have done all of that stuff don't want to be associated with the "tuner" crowd, who generally think a turbo 350 is a nissan. You know, the type that finish their can of Foldgers off and then weld it to their exhaust.
And to be honest, I can't really see a 4banger being a hot rod. Unless it has ITB's and no hood with a supercharger or something... To me, a hot rod is a 69 camaro with a roots blower and stupid big cowl induction hood lol. I'd like to see what other people have to say on the topic too, its an interesting observation.

Definition of hotrod
I find it funny how the definition of hotrod has changed over the years. Nowadays it refers to classic cars that have been sup'd up. SBC this and 60-whatever that. Hotrodding was originally stuffing the biggest, most advanced engine you could find into the lightest body available. Well now the lightest bodies around are compact and subcompact cars, and people are putting out ridiculous amounts of power out of the 4 bangers in them; or swapping in bigger/better ones. Yet, despite being a true-to-the-core hotrodder, as it is defined, these guys are ridiculed for not having a V8 in a rear drive tank. Don't get me wrong, I love me some big classic V8 muscle, but I don't get why those guys always give the small car segment such a hard time. I'm a lover of all makes and models. Every car has something it does, or can do, better than any other car. Personally I see people like Tom, who works on stuffing two and a half liter turbo monsters into 2500lb road cars as a true hot rodder. Not the guys that build a 68 Camaro with a 350 Chevy. I mean c'mon. That's not REALLY hotrodding. I mean sure, if you take a 68 Camaro and throw and LS9, big brakes, and a modern suspension on there it is a hotrod. The people at Nelsons racing have got to be the truest hot rodders around. Throwing a 1400hp motor into an incredibly light 80's rx-7 is pure hotrod (and sex). This has just been irking me as of late and I wanted to get your opinions on the whole matter. What do you see as hotrodding? Should a focus (or any car for that matter) that meets such a description be considered a hotrod or is it just another "tuner" car? Should the title be reserved for those sexy classic muscle cars with big V8's in them? I want honest opinions, not just agreement because its a Fous forum.
