wiper motor sticker shock

I drive a 2004 Focus SE sedan (2.3L automatic) with 132,000 miles on it. Last week, the left wiper stopped wiping; the right blade would hop over it. I drove home the final 14 miles while large snowflakes made it hard to see through the glass.

The next morning, I took the Focus to a Ford dealer to have it fixed.

Talk about sticker shock. I was told that the gears had stripped in the wiper motor's transmission, so I consented to let them install a new transmission; the total would be $485. Then they discovered that the wiper wouldn't work without a new relay. That brought the total (with 6 percent Maryland sales tax) to $578.

I'll bet my regular repair shop--a Mr. Tire franchise--would have found me a wiper motor transmission and relay in good used condition and done the job for under $400.

Mr.Bergner What sorts of issues? I'm actually needing to replace my wiper stud, just picked one up from a junk yard so the removal process is pretty fresh in my mind.

I thought about making a how-to for this as well, just realized this was first posted in sept.
