I have the 5spd Ti Hatch with the Handling package (Stiffer suspension and 18" rims). The car is rated as 26 city 36 highway or 30 combined.
When I do all city driving, I can easily beat the city rating...but not by much. I get an average of 27mpg for all city driving. If I do all highway driving (100%...doesn't happen often), I can get 38. However, most of the time, I do a combined driving ratio of 60% city, 40% highway. In that scenario, I get about 28.
For me, I think the tire and stiffer suspension makes the car take a hit in mileage.
Our other Focus, and SE Sport with the DCT, can easily average 32mpg combined under similar driving circumstances.
Still happy with the car though.

And there are other reliable ways to measure mpg. Such as accurately measuring the weight of the car before and after to calculate fuel weight loss. That's what PM did IIRC.

The only reliable way to measure mpg short of having a special gas tank you can accurately determine fuel level is to average over many gas tanks. Three or four tanks should get you pretty close but to account for variations in wind speed/direction and other factors you need months or even a year.

|VanceVEP72||With a whopping 570 miles on my Focus, I am averaging 27-28 mpg with 90% city driving. My commute to work is about 3 miles and a LOT of stop/go. Also, here in Phoenix, we are on "summer blend" fuel which contains I believe 10% Ethanol. It is also 100+ degrees here during the day.|

|ricomtl||I have 14000 miles on, and with 60% highway and 40% city, my average is 27.4mpg... this car SUCKS big times for city mileage it's not even funny!|

I've been tracking mine since Sept. of 2012. Highway best at 70 to 75 mph is 31.5 to 33.8 mpg's Back country roads and some city diving is running 26.5 to 30.5 mpg's I'm pretty sure this is the best mine will do. I think if I slowed down to 45 to 50 mph on the freeway I might squeeze the 37 mpg's out of it or at least that is what Ford told me, but that would have to be in the summer time and not the winter with the thicker air :) again that is what Ford told me. But If I get to frustrated over it it just take my 2003 f-150 for a ride and at 12.5 to 13.5 mpg I look forward to getting back in the Focus. Below are my actual Fuelly numbers:
28.6 -- avg MPG
26.0 (-4.5) last MPG
33.8 (12/28/12) best MPG
11414 Total Miles Tracked

I live in Champaign, IL (Home of the Univ of IL, but I'm not a student), and I get 28-30 "City" ... but on my 7-8 mile drive to work, I only go by 6 lights or so. I would assume your commute and general surroundings would mean a lot more stop and go.

Never got even close to the 37mpg they state on the EPA lol that must have been at 55mph.

I'll try your suggestion though!

|cbdallas||My Ti w/handling package topped out at 28.2 mixed highway / side roads. I've never checked it on pure highway driving.|
