jsc1429 Has anyone had issues with their 2012 focus loosing acceleration? If so, what was done, if anything, to resolve this issue? I bought mine new in 2012 and have not had any issues with this until about a week ago, I took it into the dealership and all they did was the recall for the windshield wiper issue (which took 4 days and me paying for a rental car!) and sent me on my way, telling me to bring my car back in 5 days to replace the clutch! I brought the car in bc its a major safety issue and is unsafe to drive, not the stupid windshield wipers! .... I've been researching this online and there seems to be a lot of people with this issue and Im not feeling too good about the issue being resolved.

Can't get a call back from Ford's Tech Team

I've spoken in the past to a very helpful lady at Ford, Rory Sullivan, but her extension is now assigned to someone else who takes messages but doesn't return calls. Perhaps the name 'service' is a misnomer?
I bought my 2012 Focus SE hatchback with the 6-speed auto new (ordered with the sport pkg) and took delivery in June 2012. It's been in the dealer for 'fixes' for the transmission issue (jerking, missing, etc.) 4 times and 'updates/upgrades' have been performed only to have the problem reoccur.
I have 60K on the car and am a fanatic about service. 3K o/c's w/filter, 6K rotations, 10K air filters, etc., and I'm in my 60's so I'm not drag racing with it although I do like to tromp on it once it's in a higher gear getting on a highway.
I love this car except for the tranny issue and the absurdly complicated sound system for all but those who still have yet to go to a senior prom and have their acne clear up.
Anyone suggest a similar vehicle in terms of economy, fun to drive, great mpg, etc.? I have to get this fixed or get it gone and Ford won't admit to the fact that it doesn't have a fix. Please advise.
Thanks.

My car has also had several occasions where the engine had malfunctioned and the car has needed to be towed to the closest Ford dealer for repairs. These have been competed quickly in the dealers defense but there has never really been a discussion to the causes after or a chat about the jittery transmission. luckily this has all been paid for by my company as I can honestly say that had this been my own car purchased by myself I would have long since thrown the keys back at the dealer and asked for my money back.

One way I have found of avoiding the jumpy nature of the car in low gear is to drive the car in tiptronic. It runs a lot another but obviously defeats the purpose of having an automatic vehicle.

Is there any way I can get this issue fixed? I recently had the transmission replaced due to it malfunctioning and shitting down the entire engine in the middle of auckland city at peak traffic but the issue still remains. Any advice would be really appreciated.
Have you reached out to Ford New Zealand? You can contact them by phone here: +64 (0) 9 277 8400. They'll be able to point you in the right direction.

Hey there, FFhb13.

Just read that your transmission is a bit jerky. Has your dealer provided a diagnosis? Send over the current odometer reading, your preferred dealer, and any additional symptoms; I'll look into this.

Just ask your dealer if they will apply the latest TSB upload to the car's onboard computer. Unless you have a bad clutch or seals, that typically takes care of it. My dealer has never required a diagnosis when I asked them to do this (twice now), and it's easy enough for them to just hook it up to the computer and send me away happy. I simply figure out the latest TSB from these threads (which I believe is still 14-0197), and specifically ask them to apply it. Less than an hour later, I'm out the door. I will say that after the first time I had this done, combined with changing my driving habits when driving off from a stop, I have not had the "shudders" in months. Even so, I always like the latest software, and when I went for an oil change, I explained that while I am not having any issues, I would still like the latest software. The response...sure, no problem! I have a great dealer though! Thanks Olathe Ford!

Welcome to the forum, kevingsx.

I recommend heading to your dealer to have this diagnosed. Once you have an appointment set up, please let me know.

The PowerShift 6 Speed Transmission is designed to provide the feel and efficiency of a manual transmission with the easy driving of an automatic. The PowerShift transmission automatically engages the next gear in anticipation of the shift, providing seamless shifting. It also has neutral idling, which disengages the transmission when sitting at idle, and helps to maximize fuel efficiency.

Because the PowerShift 6 Speed Transmission operates similarly to a manual transmission, you may notice some characteristics that provide a unique driving experience from the automatic transmission you may be used to:
  • When you take your foot off the accelerator pedal and the vehicle begins to slow down you may perceive a light to medium braking sensation as the transmissions makes adjustments.
  • During the break in period, the transmission may shift quicker or harder. This will smooth out after a short period of time.
  • You may hear mechanical noises when driving.
  • You may feel a difference when pulling away from a stop.

My wife brought the car (2014 titanium) in because of the same reason. The mechanic gave us a bulletin by Ford that explains that the transmission is derived from a manual transmission and has some peculiar characteristics. It has a dry clutch unlike a "conventional automatic transmissions are equipped with a torque converter. The torque converter is a fluid coupling device which dampens these positive engagement feels. " Try to experiment with giving the car more or less gas on takeoff to see if the shuddering continues. Finally: Your car is still under warranty, so bring it into the dealer. You will get your problem entered into your cars service record, even if it is normal. Therefore if you have a transmission problem later you will still have a warranty claim.
