another fastlube story

well it was 'Union day' a couple weeks ago for me (I'm the Treasurer of my Local, get 1 day a month to hold 3 shift meetings, work book, reports...) and I take a minute to run to the quick-lube place in lovely Erwin, TN. Oil change rather expensive but I had topped 7500 since last so it needed it. Castrol full synthetic 5W20. Two weeks later at around 23000 miles the "oil change indicator notification" comes on and won't freakin stop. First time with synthetic. Now it comes on each time the car starts. Will have to knock the notification down so thanx for the tips y'all.

Tiger-Heli But that's why I don't like all this high-tech mumbo-jumbo (Note the proper use of sophisticated engineering jargon).

If you just change the oil every 5K or 7.5K and keep a log, you KNOW when the oil was changed and when it needs to be changed again.

With the new system, if you don't verify the oil life is at 100% following the oil change at 7,269 or you don't reset the system yourself after you pick the car up, you don't know.

Now, the system is saying you need an oil change, but you don't, but if you reset the system NOW, you won't get a new alert until 3K miles AFTER you would have needed to change the oil, so your best bet is to change the oil and reset the system at 15K miles.

Which BTW, is exactly what you would be doing if you maintained 7.5K oil changes with a log and didn't have the system at all - so really all you've added is a nuisance indicator that you have to periodically reset ...

I had the same system in a 1984 Accord http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/201...-lx-hatchback/

And just like I'd do on a modern car, I would change the oil every 3K or 5K miles like the book or my conscience recommended and get briefly annoyed and reset the indicators when they flipped over without changing anything.

</ rant>

Kenshai Had my oil changed at the dealershipat 7269, rolled over 10k ttoday and the oil change monitor flipped on saying it needs to be changed. Was on the way back from a 6 hour trip and will take a look at the oil in the morning. My thought here is they just skippedthe astepto reset the monitoring system.

Not sure if I need the TSB applied to my car. I know I need the washer fluid one done. Would be good to get both done at the same time.
Well I had the alert activate yesterday at 15,386 miles. Last time I changed the oil and reset the monitor was at 10,092 miles. Needless to say I was alittle suprised that it came on. The only thing I did different this last oil change was I used Mobil 1.

Thinking out loud here ... I wonder if it has anything to do with the health monitor report setting? hmm ... I was just looking online and I thought that somewhere one could control at what milage the prompt would activate for the owner to run the vehicle health report. Maybe its in the car menu? I recall setting mine to 5k miles some how as a reminder that I would be changing the oil soon.
