This will be debated until the Focus Mk10 arrives. I'd say at steady state 60-65 mph with speed control engaged, on no grade, it probably isn't. Get on the throttle occasionally, it may be.

Until we see dynamometer readings of 87 vs. 91 we won't really know.

Many believe the GDI was designed from the beginning to run on 91 octane and has been "stunted / compromised" to (just barely) run on 87.

coldbear I'm careful not to put anything lower than 89 in my lawnmowers. I hate alcohol in anything other than NHRA race cars.

stuff1138 I read somewhere that 86 octane is sold in higher altitudes.

W13FOCUS It's 86 here in New Mexico. They only have unleaded and premium at Costco.

coldbear 86 octane?? Now that's got to be a power adder. I thought that was the alcohol modified fuel used in Prius only. Learn something new everyday.

W13FOCUS honestly... in the 8months ive had my 2012 focus i have used various octanes from different places. and i have been using Costco gas 86 octane and i get better mileage and performance than any other place i have used, i urge anyone who has a costco membership to use their fuel. its also cheaper. and after a few tanks you will notice a difference as well... its the best!

So the owners manual is lying? Also if many, many people say it helps, especially with their DCT, is it really anecdotal evidence any more, especially after the original owners manual clearly states "Premium fuel will improve performance". Also my fillups are about 10 gallons and I pay only $.20/gallon more so my math tells that's only $2 more a fillup. With a high compression direct injected motor, why be so cheap?
