acsmith1972 I never had any issue at any oil change place. Not even with my WRX which I never once used synthetic in and never had turbo issues. Most cars it's just too much trouble. I had two SUVs and those are easy to get under, but these low cars need ramps or to be jacked up and secured to do the work and I've got better things to do. You really lose money if you count the time it takes to do everything. Valvoline I'm in and out in 15 minutes. And if they do ever screw something up they're liable. I've had to sue people before and never once lost. It would be nice to see more people learn how to change a headlight bulb, though.

I view it differently. The #1 reason to do it myself is so it is done correctly, with the product I want, and without screwing up the drain bolt, the filter, the underengine cover, and saving enough money to cover the better quality oil.
I notice under cars where the aero is cut off by some jerk mechanic so it is 'easy' to change the oil. Which sucks IMO.
And actually yeah, I am 65 year old bag, Changing the oil is a challenge I relish. When I am too decrepit to do it, maybe I should give up driving..

I can still remember the time the dealer added 7 quarts to my 4 quart engine. Then his saying "Oh, no problem, we'll fix it next time.." What horsemanure while the blue clouds of smoke are pouring out. I basically had to tell them I would sue them to get the oil drained and filled correctly. That was the last time I let anyone do it other than myself.

After buying the oil, filter, and doing all the work you've more than spent the $20 the local oil change place would do it for. Then you have to dispose of the oil, get cleaned, I see changing the oil as something people do to say they did it.

Another reason I prefer to change the oil myself. Over 3 decades of working on my own vehicles, NEVER a problem.

I have used Mobil 1, Pennzoil Platinum, Pennzoil Platinum Ultra, and even Amsoil Signature. Whenever I have changed the oil, and checked the level, the fresh oil is usually so clean I have a hard time seeing it on the stick.

Not sure why "fresh" oil would look dark as my experience with fresh oil suggests its hard to see on the stick after an oil change.

Looks like somebody was sloppy putting oil on the filter. I hate oil messes, as they attract dirt over time. I even use a rag saturated with solvent (Brake cleaner) to wipe around the drain plug and the filter head after everything is done.

I have never had problems with drain plugs. Looks like somebody way overtightened the plug, or was just plain sloppy with the wrench.

If they have this sloppy attitude over an oil change, what will happen when the car eventually needs more extensive work?

The one time I thought I could trust an oil change place, they buggered up the drain plug and the pan threads.

I suppose I could have tapped new threads for the pan, but I didn't want shavings inside the pan. Ended up getting a new pan, and cursing at them for several hours as I changed the pan.

JoshuaCurrie Thanks for the helpful pics and walkthrough because my 2014 focus is almost due for an oil change. Almost 5k put on it in 2 months. The dealership changed it before I bought it at 45K. I was feeling kinda overwhelmed but not now on my oil change. Thanks.

sailor Haha - don't screw it in without wrench in hand to tighten it.

Cheaper to dump oil out the hole by trying to fill it without a plug than have it come out later.

Arco-Zakus Even as simple as it is, you still have to stay focused. ;) Simple errors (like a drain plug left finger tight) can have big consequences. (That is not one I had to learn about first hand.)

sailor Better to ask than wonder.

More oil on the filter could have been a loose one, seeping a little. The amount I saw matched sloppy lube of the ring, you DO want lube done for better installation/easier removal.

Don't like mangled bolt heads of any type myself, that one shouldn't cause a problem from the appearance.
