Tundrafoci With just an intake, as long as its one from a well known brand and not EBAY mod, you should be just fine without a tune. Of course the tune will make more power with it.

Tundrafoci don't drive through puddles you don't know the depth of and you'll be fine. Even in heavy rain storms I never had a problem.

sparky34kv Sailor, thanks for assist. I appreciate the reply. I am trying to make smart improvements on the car. Had it almost 10 years and have no intention of getting rid of it.

sailor As long as the gauge for your filter still shows good you don't "need" a replacement. You can double check it's operation by pressing in on the end to reset it, then seeing if the reading ends up similar after driving a while.

There are methods posted in here for doing a couple alternative filter setups to save $ over those "performance" intakes where you put a washable cone style filter either on the end of the MAF tube for a CAI (cold air intake) with the filter low to the ground at the bottom of the engine compartment OR an SRI type using the stock MAF tube reversed & modified to attach directly to the throttle body connector for a home made SRI (short ram intake).

Any of the alternatives can increase power over a plugged up stock filter, not going to have an appreciable affect on MPG for improvements. Usually done for power/sound and less $ than stock replacement when needed.

Just Asking

I saw this before and just had a couple of questions. I have an 04 ZTW with the 2.3 liter engine, I believe it is a Duratec. I want better gas mileage and don't really trust the lifetime air filter, especially since it has just over 120,000 mies on it. Does taking it out and going with a simpler CAI or Short Ram give better daily driver impact or is this more for performance minded people? I do have to occasionally drive 580 miles to help my son out in Ohio so any improvement to MPG is appreciated. I want to make improvements on the car but only if they make sense.

Rwishon13 I'm not brand new to the focus world, but did just purchase my first one. It's an 08 coupe, manual transmission. I have a lot of things I want to do and posts like these are helping me make more informed decisions.
