davisg02 I have access to Ethanol free premium 93 grade, and its about .20 cents more expensive that regular 93. Is it worth it to get the ethanol free gas or are there any benefits that anyone knows of that is running ethanol free premium versus regular E10 premium that could sway my buying decision in the future?

Good deal. If you haven't done anything with the intake yet, you could do a "Snorkel Delete" w/ a drop-in filter. You might pick-up some more MPGs.

Truth in Ruin I've only ever put 91,93,95,100 octane in it for over a year. So the 87 was very noticeable.

"Cutting out" = boggy dog shit... Does that work?

Pretty sure it would learn that 87 was thrown in there and reprogram itself to compensate after some driving.

It's not THAT huge of a difference but I can see if the car was used to premium then suddenly got a dose of the cheap stuff, it would still be using premium tuning parameters.

Truth in Ruin My wife put 87 E-0 in the car yesterday, because the station didn't have premium, and she said she could tell instantly that the car didn't like it. I only know this because I took-off at a red light, and it was cutting out like dog s**t, so I told her we might have to take the car in to get looked at... at which point she told me that she put 87 in it.

This is no joke. Those that say they can tell a difference aren't lying; it's not a "placebo."

you're not wrong. The non-turbo foci have 12:1 compression. and higher octane fuel will run better. That's not to say lower octane fuel will run bad, though, because of the knock sensors. If ford says the engine will run fine on regular, then it will. However higher octane fuel WILL resist detonation far better in high compression engines.

The old 2.0 zetecs have a compression ratio of 9.6:1
So, running higher octane fuel in a zetec will be more "silly" than it is to run higher octane fuel in the new foci, with a 12:1 compression. yes, the knock sensors come into play, and will do so more in the higher compression engines.

you're probably right, like I said, not an expert. I was under the impression that higher compression engines run better on higher octane fuel and that the knock sensors in our higher compression engine are what alow it to run the lower octane fuel with no issues. most of the older fords didn't have as high of compression as these newer foci do.

My '97 Escort doesn't have a knock sensor but the 98+ do.

So yeah for the most part everything modern from Ford has a knock sensor AFAIK.
