jbear Monday, I tackled it again. And I did it! Holy cats, I had a lot of trouble getting the thing off. I must've spent a good 2 hours before I finally got the trick of that top bolt. I'm glad I had picked up one of those little mirrors on a telescoping stick, it helped a lot.

Finally got the IAC valve off, and spent the next couple of hours cleaning it. Had to soak it repeatedly in acetone. Soak, scrub, soak, scrub, until I finally got the carbon cleaned out. Awful lot of crud on there, not surprised it wasn't working.

Let it dry out, then like to never got it back on again. At long last I did, though, ad that was the problem. The car is running well now, not dying at idle.

I suspect I'll have to take it off again, though, because I wasn't able to clean the throttle body very well. Since then I've thought of away I might be able to do it, maybe with only taking the bottom bolt off and a slight loosening of the top one. I might be able to swing it out of the way to access the holes in the TB. I'm hoping so, anyway. If not, now that I've done it once, maybe I can manage it more easily if I have to do it again.

The gasket trick was a huge help, I don't think I could've gotten the part on again without doing that. I never did find my leather punch. Paper hole-punch made a hole that was just slightly too big to hold the bolts. But I found my circular tip wood carving tool, that worked well enough. I was able to cut a hole just right, held the bolts securely.

It was such a PITA, I'm tempted to never ever do that particular job again. Bite the bullet and pay somebody else. But I did it, and it worked. My car is happy again, and so am I.

amc49 If you end up cutting a custom gasket to hold bolt in place, start by threading the LOWER bolt in first, that locates the part to swing it and then get the upper in easier. I thread both bolts into gasket maybe two plus turns to hold them on the part. I also get both started in manifold without touching the wrench.

jbear I have a hard time with just feeling for it unless it's something I'm already familiar with. Even when I look to see where it is, then think I have it firmly in my mind, when I shift position, I often lose it. I think having the ratcheting 8mm will help. Once I get on the bolt, I won't have to keep taking the wrench off and re-finding it.

It'll be a few days before I get back to it, I have company coming from out of town.

Likewise, the hands are what are doing the work and they need the easiest access, that commonly means not looking at it. I look to locate spatial coordinates like starter closeness then shift my position once I have the area locked in my head. Most of the work is by feel only once you get in your head what you are touching.

FocusKnot I have found that attempting to look at the IAC while trying to remove/reinstall it is almost pointless. I find it much easier just to feel where the bolts are and go for it.

I use a combo wrench, but I guess anything that fits in there will work.

amc49 I seem to do quite well on OTC simple motion sickness pills for cheap, just never thought of doing them under the car.

jbear Oh, good idea, the leather punch! I just happen to already have one, if I can find it. I didn't do anything involved today, grandson is in from Seattle. He's 14, his sister, who lives nearby now, brought him over to visit.

After they left, I went to town to take care of a few things. My CE light's back on, so I stopped ta Autozone. The only thing that came up now is the code for he O2 sensor on the cat, which, of course, will be because the cat's gutted.

It's not dying as much as before, and now I wonder if the old alt was part of the problem, but not all. It doesn't seem to have the misfires anymore, no idea why. Maybe it hasn't done it enough to trigger the codes. Anyway, I have some things to check and things to fix, and I'm going to get that IAC off later this week and clean it, and see if that helps. Meanwhile, if time allows, I can work on unrelated issues that need attention.

The med I take is ondansetron, which is generic of Zofran. MD's are pretty easy about writing an RX for this, it doesn't get you buzzed or anything, it just makes you not puke. I haven't had any side effects from it, but it has warnings for a few. Dramamine knocks me out, at least the original did.

amc49 The hard part's getting down on the ground to begin with, and back up. Also I have ear inner-issues that cause positional vertigo.

You should see me do it, if the local toughs ever figure that out I'm as good as jacked up. And you describe a nausea issue I now have as well, never thought about it in that detail before but I'm gonna take motion sickness pills next time I go under car too. I get to where I'm gonna throw up and can't fix anything like that. I thought I was going crazy.

Thanks for the push there. Stupidly, I think of fixing cars way before I think of fixing myself....................

FYI, A cheap leather punch like commonly found at Micheal's or Hobby Lobby (for like 40% to 50% off if you download the online coupon) makes proper smaller holes in a made up gasket in seconds. I make them just small enough to let the dog point of bolt enter then I thread the bolt into the gasket by hand. I use X-acto hobby knife to cut the bigger holes. Standard dark grey 1/16" thick bulk gasket material. I make gaskets for all kinds of things, it started with making them to avoid buying $50 carb kits just to get a stupid single gasket.

I didn't have an 8mm one, just a few SAE's. So I tried just a combo wrench, obviously with no luck. So today, when I was in town, I got an 8mm box-end ratchet. They only had one brand (Kobalt) at Lowe's wanted $15.00. None @ Wally-world, only SAE's except for a few sets that didn't go that small. Finally found one at Home Depot for just under $6, Husky brand.

I found my ramps, drove it up on those. No way can I get a 1/4 ratchet in there. But I got the flat ratchet box end now, so I'll try it again. The angle is hard for me, I think if I had access to a lift it would be a lot easier. But I don't, so I just have to bite the bullet and deal with what I have.

Anytime I'm either working on electrical or very near electrical that could be trouble, I take off the neg terminal first. I saw the starter in the pics, and read one guy's post about scaring himself when he bumped the starter and got sparks. I tend to be paranoid anyway about accidents, so I took precautions accordingly.

My lawn furniture cushion works great, I put down cardboard first, and the cushion slides easily over the cardboard, so it's easy to scoot in under the car. The hard part's getting down on the ground to begin with, and back up. Also I have ear inner-issues that cause positional vertigo. When I got under the car, waited for things to stop spinning, and realized I forgot my flashlight, could see diddly squat. got back out from under, sat up, again, waiting for spinning to stop, I thought I was going to throw up. I had to go in and take my anti-nausea med, wait an hour, and try again. Then I was fine. For the next try, and any time I have to get under the car, I'll know to take that first, a good 30 min. or so before I start.

I need one of those little round mirrors on a stick, too.

Good suggestion on the gasket holes, I'll do that.
