Fixing mine right now. Adding in a long loop of 6 wires to be able to quickly fix next time if it happens again. Like the battery cables or the ignition coil leads. Too short.
Just as I have asked a hundred times before with other moronic issues these cars have, how is it the industry learned how to not have faults like this 60 years ago and then Ford with all their 'quality' manages to screw things up again? Not like they shouldn't be aware of it.

Vehicle: 2003 Focus Wagon SE
Symptoms: No third bake light, left/right brake lights work normal while car in Park and the burn constantly while shifter out of Park.
This thread has been a wonderful help. I never would have thought that the thirds brake light/cyclops light/high brake light (or whatever you want to call it) would have such an affect to the brake lighting system.
While my harness was not as destroyed as the one in the pictures, one of the wires to the third light was severed. It broke in such a location I had to remove the bottom end of the flexible boot to get to it. I spliced in a nice long wire so as to not have to worry about strain relief as that portion of the wire loom seems to be in tension. Poor design/execution by Ford.
<<<Edit: The bottom plastic piece has 4 tabs, two on each end. It pops up but I could not get it completely out, probably because the harness or washer tube was zip-tied to it. I found it impossible to reinstall the boot onto it without popping it out.>>>
While splicing in a length of wire solved my brake light issue it was quite obvious to me that the remaining wires were another time bomb waiting to happen as every single one of them had cracks and gaps in their insulation to the point of exposing copper. How I 'solved' this issue was to plaster on some Brush-On-Electrical-Tape. I have used it successfully on boats, dune buggies, and motorcycles in the past. I smothered that portion of the harness in the gooey mess then slid the rubber boot over it. I dries to a nice flexible cover that will keep moisture out as well as the most important: keep the wires from shorting out. Nice feature is that it only takes about 5 minutes to dry.
The brush on crap was purchased at Advance Auto Parts (Part No.: BOT55TRI). I am sure AutoZone and other places have it. Probably even Lowes and Home Depot.
I am sad to say that I had driven about 1000 miles before realizing that there was a problem with the brake lights. One lady actually ran me down a few weeks ago and told me that the brake lights were not working. I pulled into a fuel station (needed gas anyway) and checked the brake lights (car was in park at the time though) and they worked fine. I just figured that lady was crazy....I guess the joke was on me. Thank God I was not involved in a vehicle vs vehicle mating ritual.

|ghowitt||I had the exact same problem with my 2000 Focus Wagon and all 9 wires were bared with 1 being totally broken. Wrapped everything with electrical tape and fixed broken wire by adding a new piece with joiners. A bit tricky tucking everything back in with the tape on it but managed to make it work. All is good again. Thanks everyone for the great input.|

The hatch is infamous for breaking the wires because of the bending and opening/closing.
Good too see some new guys pop up here, hopefully we can help you out more, if you need it.
