On 2012/2013 models I can just the oem directional/ok buttons on my steering wheel. I really think you're best option would be the maestro rr module and fo2 harness to retain sync.

When a HU is replaced in a SYNC vehicle, is there a certain HU I need to look into? With all of the directional controls and what not? Or are those outside of the radio?

If you go the AX-ADBOX2 route, I think you have to also purchase an awsc-1 to retain sync, as sync needs the voice command button on your steering wheel. At that point it may be less costly to go the maestro route. With the maestro route can also tap into your obd2 port to display gauges on your head unit and clear engine codes.

I have a 2014 Focus SE that I just bought, and I cannot find much information about replacing the HU, but retaining SYNC functionality.

Rating: 09/10, would be 10 if it had the capacitive touch screen of the higher end models.

Stuff to make it work:
Schosche FD6200 dash kit
Scosche FD02SR stereo interface kit set to Sony wired remote protocol (don't cut any wire loops and it works just fine for the Pioneer AVH-4200NEX)

Optional Stuff:
Parking brake bypass relay triggered by remote on lead from FD02SR harness
Chromecast powered by the Apple CarPlay USB port on the Pioneer Stereo (would recommend Microsoft wireless display adapter instead)
