You got it. The pump absolutely cannot be allowed to whine at all. Once you suck air the pump continues to shred it smaller and smaller. The longer you run motor the worse that gets. Best to fill and let sit to deaerate what is in reservoir, then start car up and rack from limit to limit ONE TIME and let sit again 30 more minutes. Only as little engine running as it takes to pump fluid in.

Done right you fill up and two times rack limit to limit with 2 sits and no air at all in it, drive the wheels off. I've never had air issues in all the years of doing that.

When empty you have to fill it QUICK, I use somebody else to start the car and several bottles of fluid open to throw them in as quick as possible.

I tell people to think of the PS pump as an engine oil pump..........would you crank up engine empty of oil? Really the same thing going on there.

porcupinepuffer I've never had a power steering pump failure either. This car didn't have any issue leading up to the change. I wanted to put new fluid in as I know the previous owner did next to nothing for general maintenance. Let me tell ya, it was not pretty some of the color that came out. I'm assuming there was an air pocket of some sort that chopped up and foamed up the fluid on me by what you're implying? The way it was foamy in such short time wouldn't quite make sense except for air being chopped up allover the place. I consider myself an intermediate to advanced backyard mechanic, but maybe I did rush it a bit too much. She'll be getting a pretty good flush at this point. I got some Mercon V and she is back and business purring like a champ.

amc49 Sorry, owner competence issue there bucko, I assure you the type of fluid there had absolutely ZERO to do with those issues. By your description, an incompetent drain and fill the problem there. I saw it all day long at the parts stores and using the CORRECT fluids.

The new conventional wisdom has people gone stupid. If you whine the pump AT ALL you have screwed up, people refuse to accept that since it is commonly thought when a power steering pump whines all it needs is fluid only and nothing else. Absolutely the worst thing you can think there..................whine at ALL = damage, one either gets that or has problems, like here.

I haven't lost a power steering pump in 45 years, and I routinely change fluid to use whatever I have lying around. I'd throw ATF+4 in there in a second.

porcupinepuffer I had this leftover brand new bottle of ATF+4. I did some searches on whether I could use it where Mercon ATF is required. I found some posts saying I should be fine and nothing saying othewise. Well upon flushing her out and running the bottle through my car with this stuff, it is absolutely incompatible in every way shape and form. The pump sounds like it's running dry, it's just a pile of foamy crap in the reservoir. It actually boils over when you shut the car off and makes a nice mess. So now I finally got rid of that container of ATF+4, but still need to go out and buy the proper stuff for my car

amc49 Yes...........other than Honda late model with specific requirements, the door is wide open on PS fluid, almost anything will work. I have mixed so many types you wouldn't believe it. ZERO issues. The big problem I find is when someone drains the fluid, they do not recognize just how quick the pump can pump empty and just like an engine, try pumping it dry of lube and if unlucky that day you damage the engine within 5 seconds of running dry and possibly even faster. When filling up a PS pump you have to stand right over the inlet with preopened bottles to choke that sucker as fast as you can until enough volume in there to not run dry. I use a second person starting car to not have to run around car as fast. If you get the oil in there fast enough often no or little moan at all, when you pump it full of air by filling slowly you then risk damage as pump essentially trying to run dry then.

The only pump I've ever had to change in 40 years was because I did not realize this and pumped it dry for a second while I started the car and then took my happy time getting out to fill, thinking the moan was nothing. It is the sound of METAL ON METAL when the usual separating oil is gone......................once the damage is done then they moan all the time because metal parts are hitting that should not be touching at all. Mild seizure damage. Pump will still work but at reduced ability depending on level of mechanical damage there.

71ChevelleSS amc your right about honda p/s fluid. i do so many rebuilds and replaces because they leak and people put the wrong stuff in, but you can use honda/acura ps fluid in other vehicles, my zx3 has acura fluid in it due to pump replacement. was leaking bad when i got the car.

Every auto parts store in pittsburgh carries genuine Mercon V. Autozone and advance auto both carry multiple brands of it. I know there are at least 20 of these stores in the pittsburgh area. NAPA also has it.

amc49 Change to any fluid you want, they are all the same basic oil weight and the noise will not go away, only by possibly changing the basic weight by using like Lucas will the noise possibly change. But the steering effort will be affected too..........

The noise if constant is from wear, or a badly remachined rebuild, or air in lines. If noise is only at rack limit it is normal, and an expectation of no noise there is abnormal. Pumps that are tight and have running surfaces that fit right on are quiet. Solid oil with no air in it helps too.

Welcome to Focus Fanatics!

Your question would be answered in the previous posts of this thread. Do a flush / replacement of your fluid replace with ATF and see how that helps.

One thing not mentioned in this thread is the use of Lucas Oil additive. I have found this cuts down the noise but also due to its thicker state cold driving requires more muscle.

Cuabn04 I can't tell you how long I've been looking for someone to address the horrible Ford PS groan...so what would you recommend I use for my power steering fluid? I hate to seem stupid but after so long my degree of bluntness is necessary. I'd really appreciate the insight!
