You used to have to hope the head reached optimum operating temp before the choke went off, or else... wubba wubba wubba, LOL.
Long idle time will hurt overall mileage a bit, but the idea of driving easy at first mainly takes care of the motor oil temps, while the grommets and seals on the accessory pumps and trans components will still benefit from a little additional heat soak that a longer idle gives... just my mechanical-coddling eccentric nature, I guess, but my cars last really long, in spite of the flogging I give them after they get warm.

"Go easy for the first few miles" is the one consistent recommendation, at one time when engines didn't run very well cold it was somewhat enforced by that factor (or at least a good reminder).
I subscribe to the minimal idle time recommendation, once it's warm enough to operate it's better to warm it up under light loads. (only in extreme cold is there a noticeable wait time before use)

I'm sure it's been discussed before, in all the years this has been running, but I'll give it a go anyway... there are several different fluids circulating through several different pumps in a car: engine oil is only one. It's always better to let the engine bay warm up even if you have a block heater. Seals shrink and get harder when they are cold, regardless of the material they're made from.
If you want to keep a car "fresh" as long as possible, then let it warm up for 3-5 minutes with or without a block heater before running, and go easy for the first few miles afterward. The steering rack/pump, slave cylinders, and trans syncros (or especially if you have an ATX) will benefit from letting a little warmth creep into the fluids and seals before running.

|excessads||read quite a few blogs, writeups, manuals, all point to minimal warm up and no full throttle until temp hit 165 or half way. If the windshield's iced up, then warm up for 5 mins while ices's being scraped off.|

The Kat heaters come in 400,600,750 watt units for FF's. Anyone know for sure what a OEM unit would pull? (watts).?

I have to have the coldest FF that has ever been made. On a 30 degree AM I do not get heat till 4 miles. I;ve changed every part on that cooling systen and it runs cold for miles.
